Meet Derek.

Derek was born blind, which meant that his fathers dream for him, of being a surfer, looked impossible.

But when Derek was 17, he learned of his father's dream, and the fact that he had been named after pro-surfer Derek Ho, and decided to give it a go.

At first, Derek's father helped him out, taking him to the ocean every day. When he started to improve, his father sent him on a course, to properly learn.

Derek practiced with friends, and soon fell in love with surfing. How does he do it?

“I listen to the ocean and feel it,” says Derek. “And every single part of a wave makes different noises. So, I can decide which side of the wave I should surf towards."
