Look what's happening in Worksop!
We often hear concerns that Worksop is becoming a “ghost town” shunned by new businesses and investors.
However, there is lots going on in our area – with thousands of jobs and houses set to be created.
Here's a look at different developments across Worksop and what stage they're at.
1) HIGHGROUNDS ROAD
Plans for an 82-bedroom hotel and restaurant at Highgrounds Road were lodged at the beginning of this year.
The proposal also includes four retail units – and was submitted alongside another development by Chicken Villas, which includes a gym, KFC, Costa and Taco Bell.
Developer Mansion House Group said the site could create “in excess of 35 jobs”.
Landlord Roger Smith has objected to the plans after building a hotel at his nearby pub, The Lock Keeper, last year.
He said: “With having ourselves, and the Travelodge up the road, alongside many hotels in the town centre, the last thing the town needs is more hotels.”
These plans are set to be put to Bassetlaw District Council’s planning committee.
Developers: Mansion House Group and Chicken Villas
Status: To be decided
Work expected to commence: End of 2018, commencing in 2019
2) CARLTON ROAD
Planning chiefs are set to decide the future of a long-derelict Worksop site earmarked for a £15 million shopping complex which could create up to 200 jobs.
Developer Opus North requested permission to build three retail units housing “well-known brands”, a garden centre and restaurant at a five-acre site off Carlton Road in June 2017. The proposals are now set to be brought before Bassetlaw District Council’s planning committee after an extension lodged by the authority in order for “outstanding matters” to be resolved ended.
If given the go-ahead, the plans have the potential to create up to 200 jobs – but will entail demolishing two homes on the border of the site.
Developer: Opus North
Status: To be decided
Work expected to commence: Unknown
VESUVIUS SITE, SANDY LANE
The regeneration of the former Vesuvius site took a major step forward in February after councillors rubber-stamped multi-million pound plans to build an Asda supermarket and petrol station at the location.
It is hoped the scheme will create up to 200 jobs and attract additional retail, leisure and entertainment facilities to the site which has lain derelict for more than a decade.
The development is scheduled for completion in late 2019.
Asda expects to begin recruitment next year.
Commercial Estates Group will oversee an immediate initial investment of about
£5 million on infrastructure to provide access to the site, delivering a new roundabout and remediating contaminated land for Asda’s development.
The Vesuvius factory closed in 2006.
Developer: Commercial Estates Group
Status: Approved
Work expected to commence: Late 2019. Asda is expected to start recruiting next year
4) MANTON WOOD BUSINESS PARK
Bassetlaw District Council says junction works are now complete to unlock “one million square feet of employment land” which has the potential to create up to 1,359 jobs.
It is hoped phase two site preparation and infrastructure works worth £9.9m can now go ahead.
The new junction is part of the second phase of improvements to the A57 road system around Worksop.
The work is designed to make journeys easier and development sites more attractive to investors.
In the first phase, work on the A60/A57/B6024 St Anne’s Drive roundabout was completed.
The second phase enables the delivery of two key employment sites, the extension of Manton Wood and also opens up a new site at Shireoaks Common.
Developer: Network Space
Status: Complete
5) GATEFORD PARK
A total of 750 homes are planned for Gateford Park, in addition to a school with places for 210 children, a play area and communal parkland.
Currently there are three developers on site, including Barratt Homes which has permission for 152 homes – nine of which have already been sold off-plan. David Wilson has permission for 98 homes and Jones Homes has permission for 168 homes.
In addition, Bassetlaw District Council is currently leading on infrastructure improvements that include the installation of traffic lights at the junction of Raymoth Lane and Gateford Road.
Developers: Barratt Homes, David Wilson, Jones Homes
Status: In progress
6) THE GRANGE
Harron Homes is currently on site with permission to build 167 four and five-bedroom homes.
This includes a play area and an extension to St Luke’s CE Primary School on Brancliffe Lane.
Alison Taylor-Shaw, sales and marketing director at the company, said: “We love this area.
“The development location is perfect.”
Developer: Harran Homes
Status: In progress
Councillor Simon Greaves, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, said: “Supporting business and growth are two of the Council’s key priorities for the district. This can only be done by attracting new residents and families with the development of new housing estates and unlocking new employment sites that bring more jobs for local people.
“Worksop also needs the right infrastructure and road improvements to support future development. That’s why the council has been working with Sheffield City Region and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnerships to secure funding for the infrastructure that Worksop needs. New development also creates the funding that helps to build new roads, schools and classrooms that allow towns to grow when populations rise.
“Worksop is a growing town and the Council is working with developers and partners to allow all of these positive things to happen. There are a number of exciting projects already underway and we are working hard to create opportunities that will drive improvements right across Worksop.”
