This election cycle seems to be everywhere; one place it definitely isn't is the Gulf of Mexico.

An oil rig off the coast of Louisiana.

2

We can't believe this : Oil Company Royal Dutch Shell has dumped 90,000 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. A passing helicopter noticed the spill last week, and even though it is now contained, it has contaminated 12-13 miles worth of ocean. A blood-like sheen can be seen on the water.

The spill as seen from above.

Shell has said that cleanup has already begun, but negative impact on the Gulf and on the environment in general will be unavoidable.

The clean up process is difficult, expensive, and time consuming.

4

Locals aren't convinced, having dealt with things like this before;

"You sit down for dinner and you watch the news and you see another spill with tens of thousands of gallons of oil and reports that no one is hurt or the leak has stopped," Colette Pichon Battle, executive director of the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy, told the progressive advocacy group. "Just from experience, that that's probably not true."

This isn't the first time this has happened.

5

Given Shell's history with oil spills in the Gulf, it may be hard for them to clean up this mess, in more ways than one.

The oil spill stretches into the horizon.

Surprised you haven't heard about this? So were we.
