Star Trek; Beyond, is the third film in a franchise based on a very long running and deeply loved T.V show. But it's also got something in it that's a complete first.

John Cho, who plays Sulu in this incarnation of Star Trek, revealed that Sulu is gay.

Sulu was originally played by George Takei, who later came out as gay.

According to Cho, Star Trek's co writer Simon Pegg (who also plays Scotty!) intended to make Sulu's orientation a nod to George Takei, who came out in 2005.

"I liked the approach," Cho told Australia's Herald Sun, "which was not to make a big thing out it. Which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations."

Sulu is a beloved character by many Star Trek fans

The writers may be playing this down, but there's no denying that this is monumental. Not only is Sulu this first openly gay Star Trek character, but also the first openly gay character in a Sci-Fi blockbuster. Hopefully Sulu is the first of many!

Also, here's hoping he get's a super cute boyfriend!
