Top 10 Mobile MOBA's

The MOBA genre is a massive beast in the gaming sphere. While the PC reigns supreme, the relatively new genre has made some headway on the console market as well.

But now, with smartphones getting more and more powerful, the MOBA has broken through there and the app stores are now littered with offerings.

Let's take a look at a few of the better ones in this list of the top MOBA's on mobiles. For more visit: www.GambitMag.com

MOBA Legends

This first entry is easy thanks to the developers letting us get in on the fun a little early. The game features some dynamic and intuitive game controls that work quite well on smaller screens.

One thing we really like is that the fierce and fast-paced combat lasts only 10 minute or less, so you can get in a match while waiting in line or doing your business.

The game also features a number of officially licenced characters from famous properties like Chucky the doll, with the latest offering being freaking RoboCop from, well, RoboCop.

2

Vainglory

Vainglory is a MOBA developed and published by the lovely named Super Evil Megacorp for both iOS and Android devices and looks darn pretty.

In Vainglory, teams have three players who each control a Hero and weaker computer-controlled "minions", spawn much like the larger PC counterparts. Games tend to ake about 25 minutes, so be sure to set some time aside.

There are two PvP modes of Vainglory: Standard, in which the whole map is available, and Battle Royale, in which progression is faster and the battle is limited only to the lane.

Heroes of Order & Chaos

I remember back when Gameloft was making cellphone games when cellphones had number pads and touchscreens hadn't yet been introduced. Hell, using the internet on a cellphone was a chore. So you can imagine that those early game were pretty sad things.

But now the company has evolved and taken a stab at the MOBA (one of the first) on the platform that made it famous/infamous. Heroes of Order and Chaos looks quite nice and features 3v3 and 5v5, although the latter can become a nightmare if you aren't playing on an iPad.

There are tournaments and everything, so the player base is quite sizeable with a good community, but the game does feel like it's doing too much in such a small space. Buying stuff is a pain and the interface gets messy on a smaller screens, so if you're wanting the most of Heroes of Order & Chaos play it on an iPad.

4

Call of Champions

Call of Champions claims to be the most intense MOBA on mobile devices and it might just be right with that statement. The magic lies in the fact that the game features some of the shortest matches of any MOBA.

Gaming on smartphones is a lot of fun, but trying to cram a PC game onto a mobile rarely works. The matches can easily be played while waiting needing to kill some time which makes the game a lot of fun on the go.

Call of Champions also works well if you are new to the MOBA scene as it's a pretty bare-bones affair. There is no store and no minions spawning. But the fun thing is that you work to steal towers until you make it to the enemy core.

5

Ace of Arenas

Gaea Mobile really thought about the platform they were on when they released Ace of Arenas. Silly name aside, the game skips the incessant screen tapping in favor of swipe controls.

This control scheme allows for really clear target distinction which makes the game a lot more fun than most cluttered mobile MOBA's. Another point in the games favor comes from the really streamlined interface.

While the lane system may look pretty bog standard because of how uncluttered it looks, in reality there is a lot of depth that allow for some pretty strategic battles.

6

Heroes of SoulCraft

"Don't remain in vain, glory and victory is near: answer the call of champions and become the Ace of the Arenas in this MOBA." That description in the Google Play Store for Heroes of SoulCraft has a lot of balls.

That said Heroes of SoulCraft works quite well thanks to letting you take part in quick 5 minute (3v3) or 15 minute (5v5) matches. This is great as you can play a round on the go, but also sit down for something longer and with a little more meat.

Strangely there is a PC version of the game that's free on Steam, but it's almost universally disliked. This just shows that a game designed for mobiles that works well and is much-loved, simply does not translate onto PC.

7

League of Masters

League of Masters is a mobile MOBA that you'd be forgiven for not knowing about. The game features one vs. one and three vs. three battles against AI and human opponents.

The matches tend to run between five to ten minutes so you can get in a couple of matches while on the train, but the really fun thing about League of Masters is the really fun 1v1 mode.

Sure, the game mechanics aren't all that expansive, but it's not often that any MOBA allows you to have 1v1 matches that manage to make the game stand out when you want to mix things up a little.

8

The Witcher Battle Arena

The Witcher experience on a mobile may have been a pipe-dream, but the Witcher Battle Arena is still pretty fun, even if it often gets overlooked. It's fast, fun and a really easy to learn MOBA set in the Witcher universe. In Battle Arena two three-hero teams fight against each other, trying to capture and hold conquest points in short, action-packed battles.

Designed with mobile devices in mind, Battle Arena combines intuitive controls with skill-based strategies and fast-paced action. The game also allows you to unlock everything in-game just by playing, so you won't have to spend any money just to keep up with everyone.

The game wasn't all that well-received by critics, and to be fair matches do often drag on, but I'm a sucker for The Witcher so it makes the last.

9

Eternal Arena

Some of the titles on this list go with the "less is more" idea because of the mobile nature of the platform they are working with. Eternal Arena says heck to this by tossing 40 playable heroes at you and a number of different game modes, including a fairly expansive single-player Story mode.

The game is more along the lines of the traditional MOBA and the single-player mode is there so you can enjoy the game on the go. Sure, this means that games tend to last longer, but it also means you may not open this one up while on the go because it's mostly an offline affair.

The controls are also more traditional mobile fare with an onscreen joystick and buttons. Eternal Arena is still a bit of fun, but it does feel a bit more clunky than it should.

10

Planet of Heroes

Planet of Heroes is an upcoming mobile MOBA that is currently in open-beta, but it already has a lot of buzz thanks to some solid mechanics. The game is also designed from the ground up for mobiles instead of working backwords from a PC version or base idea.

The team is also filled with a number of current top MOBA players which means a lot of work is being put in to make Planet of Heroes a competitive product, instead of just a bunch of colorful characters that tend to be highly unbalanced.

It's only so far down the list because it's not a full release yet, but that shouldn't stop you from getting in on the open-beta to be a part of the action as it develops.
