Turok Evolution

Turok Evolution on the consoles was soft of the point everyone gave up on the series. Things got really weird and the game didn't play, or run, all that well. So it's pretty fair to assume most people skipped the version that hit the Game Boy Advance. This is unfortunate because the game is pretty darn impressive!

The game is like a mix of Metal Slug and the Contra series. It's hard to place which game Turok Evolution takes from more, but you will clearly see both as this side-scrolling shooter plays out. And while most clones aren't all that impressive, Turok Evolution is darn impressive.

The GBA had a number of FPS games of varying levels of quality, and with Turok always being an FPS, it would make sense to try an clone that experience. Thankfully, the developers went a different route and pulled of not only a very interesting game, but a quality one!

Urban Yeti!

I could write a full article on this game alone. I mean, how does one pitch the idea of a Grand Theft Auto 1 clone where you play as a Yeti (which happens to be a Sasquatch, not a Yeti) in a city setting, let alone find a studio willing to spend money to publish it. I can't answer the first part, but the later seems to be by selling it via mini infomercials in limited quantites.

Urban Yeti! plays like an early open-world game developed by a couple of drinking programmers over an extended weekend. Jokes aside, the game is really interesting in the history of strange video games. Gameplay is par for the course, but Urban Yeti! does offer up lots of mini-games to keep things fresh.

These games all take the form of other classic video games from the days of the Atari 2600 and early arcade games. It's a very strange experience seeing a Yeti, er, Sasquatch running through representations of classic games.

Rebelstar: Tactical Command

Rebelstar: Tactical Command is essentially X-Com for the GBA and that alone is good enough to grab anyones attention. If you haven't heard of the game, you aren't alone as it came out around the time that Advance Wars released, almost completely overshadowing Rebelstar: Tactical Command.

That's a darn shame as the game is not only interesting, but it's a fantastic experience. The anime style visuals look great on the GBA and fighting those Grey-styled aliens only draws a stronger connection to the X-Com series. The alternate box-art for the game even even makes it look like a title in the X-Com series.

If the idea of an anime X-Com should have you opening another tab in your browser to search this on out over on Ebay. Interesting doesn't always equal god on these lists, but Rebelstar: Tactical Command is the exception.

Ninja Five-O

What happens when you cross the original Bionic Commando and Ninja Gaiden? Well, you get Ninja Five-O, and while it sounds like an awesomely bad 80s film (think Miami Connection) it's just plain awesome.

Ninja Five-O is a really lame lame, but everything else is pretty great on all counts. The controls are tight and the action is fast and heavy. It's a blast from beginning to end. The game is also pretty hard, so those that love a challenge will want to check this one out.

Konami really nailed it with this title at a time when the name Konami actually held some weight. Too bad they mostly make pachinko machines and spit on all the goodwill they've built since the early days of gaming. So good luck with ever seeing this one get re-released in any form.

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis

This one makes the interesting list for a lot of reasons, none of them positive. Starting off with the name Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and ending with it being a crap port of a then 15 year old game, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis was a celebration of just how far the series had fallen.

The GBA was a fantastic piece of kit that hosted tons of incredible games, but for whatever reason Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis was just too much. What's more troubling is that at the time of its release you could download a Genesis emulator to your PC and have a better experience.

Maybe the lack of "blast processing" really did hinder the Game Boy Advance, or, you know, the developers really didn't care much about the project. That would be pretty interesting and a possible story for another day.
