The Krubera-Voronya cave system has been measured at over 7020 feet (2140 m) deep.

The first team to explore the cave system only went 311 feet down in 1960. But with each new expedition, the cave system was found to go deeper.

The cave system is located in the Arabika Massif of the Gagra Range mountain range, in Abkhazia, Georgia.

The system has two primary branches: Novokuibyshevskaya and Main, which splits off into several smaller branches and contains the deepest parts of the cave system.

In 1960, when the caves were first explored they were classified as shallow, but they were also marked as needing further research.

In 1999, when a team explored as far as 2296 feet down, the cave system became intriguing again.

This has resulted in extensive mapping efforts.

Saul Pankene from Lithuania was the first woman to reach the final record breaking depth of 7020 feet.

Gennady Samokhin first explored the current recorded depth in 2007.

In 2012, 59 participants from nine countries explored Kruber Cave together.

The nine countries were Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Spain, Great Britain, Israel, Lebanon, Ireland and Poland.

They brought with them 40 gallons of gas, over 1100 pounds of food, and 3000 batteries.

The deepest camp the speleologists pitched was at a depth of 6430 feet.

The expedition lasted from July 21st to August 26th, 2012.

The previous record for depth explored in this cave system was set in 2001 by the Russian-Ukrainian team who found the cave area at 5,610 feet deep.

At a depth of 656 feet, the cave splits into its two main caves. Then, the main branch splits into several small ones.

Since the Krubera-Voronya cave system has only one entrance, it may be difficult to explore further, but the cave is still an object of huge interest for scientists.
