Millions of people took part in the challenge, dumping buckets of cold water on their heads in aid of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, an incurable disease that attacks the central nervous system
Even Bill Gates took the plunge

Well, the challenge raised over 100 million dollars, which is serious money. And that money has helped fund a major breakthrough in the treatment of ALS!
It worked!

They have finally identified the gene that causes ALS, a gene called NEK1. This is a HUGE step forward!

We're still a long way off from curing ALS, but it's good to know that nobody got soaking wet in vain! Good job ice bucket challengers!
