Most memorable national anthem moments

1965: Robert Goulet botches the lyrics before a Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston fight in Maine. "Ali hit the wrong guy," The Boston Globe's Bud Collins writes.

1968: Tommie Smith and John Carlos give the "black power" salute at the Mexico City Olympics.

1968: Jose Feliciano's bluesy performance at the World Series is considered the first nontraditional rendition seen by so many Americans, some of whom criticize him.

1972: Royals owner Ewing Kauffman, upset at signs of disrespect during the anthem, decides to play it only on special occasions. Policy lasts two games, during which fans wrote "wondering if my people were Russians," Kauffman said.

1983: Marvin Gaye performs a funky rendition at the NBA All-Star Game.

1990: Comedienne/actress Roseanne Barr speedily screeches her way through the anthem prior to a Padres game in San Diego before finishing by grabbing her crotch and spitting on the ground.

1991: Prior to Super Bowl XXV in Tampa, shortly after the beginning of the first Gulf War, Whitney Houston delivers what is widely considered to be the greatest rendition of the anthem ever.

1993: A struggling Carl Lewis stops to tell fans "I'll make up for it" before a Bulls-Nets game.

1996: Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refuses to stand during the anthem, citing Islamic beliefs, and is suspended by the NBA.

1996: Florida Panthers fans toss rats on the ice during the anthem amid the club's Stanley Cup run.

2001: Before the race, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler substitutes the closing line with "home of the Indianapolis 500." He later apologizes.

2001: Macy Gray is booed in her hometown of Canton, Ohio, as she struggles through the lyrics before Dolphins-Rams exhibition.

2001: Dolphins and Raiders players hold flags during the anthem at Pro Player Stadium in the first game since the Sept. 11 tragedy. Tears flow from Raiders coach Jon Gruden, who says, "It's an emotional time for all of us."

2003: Manhattanville College basketball player Toni Smith turns her back during the anthem in protest. A flag-carrying Vietnam veteran confronts her on the court.

2003: Poor 13-year-old Natalie Gilbert forgets the words while performing the anthem before Game 3 of the 2003 NBA Western Conference quarterfinals. But then-Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks comes through to help her out.

2003: Some Canadiens fans in Montreal boo "The Star-Spangled Banner" and some Panthers fans boo "O Canada." Canadiens great Jean Beliveau tapes a video appeal, and Montreal fans cheer the American anthem the next home game.

2004: Prior to an exhibition hockey game between the USA and Canada, Caroline Marcil forgets the words to the "Star-Spangled Banner" — TWICE — apologizes to the crowd, goes backstage to GET A COPY OF THE LYRICS and puts the cherry on top by wiping out in her return to the ice, before just giving up and calling it a day. The GOAT of anthem flubs.

2008: Cuba Gooding, Sr., the father of Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding, Jr., and a recording artist in his own right as the lead singer of the Main Ingredient in the '70s, provides us with his own memorable rendition of the anthem at a basketball tournament. He's obviously a talented guy, but he starts getting a little loose with the lyrics around the 50-second mark.

2011: Prior to the Steelers-Packers Super Bowl XLV, pop star Christina Aguilera completely mixes up several lines to the anthem. But no big deal — only 10 billion people were watching.

2013: On the ice before a Memorial Cup tilt between Halifax and Portland, Alexis Normand forgets the words to the anthem and tries to mumble and hum her way through to the end.

2016: Backup 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick starts a trend of kneeling during the pregame national anthem because, as he said, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." The movement grows in Week 1 of the regular season as Chiefs CB Marcus Peters raises a fist and four Dolphins players kneel during the anthems prior to their games.
