He Was A Protegé and Peer Of Martin Luther King, Jr.
As a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Lewis was the youngest civil rights leader among the "Big Six" during the civil rights era, a group which also included Martin Luther King, Jr., James Farmer, Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, and A. Philip Randolph.

At age 19, Lewis joined the CORE Freedom Ride. Freedom Riders challenged the illegally segregated facilities at a number of interstate bus terminals in the South, often facing police violence along the way. At age 19 Donald Trump was receiving one of his 4 deferments from the Vietnam War.
Hope Meets Change.
The Obamas traveled to Selma to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery civil rights marches at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, March 7, 2015 and Bloody Sunday, the day when civil rights marchers attempting to walk to the Alabama capital of Montgomery to end voting discrimination against African Americans, clashed with police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis's work paved the way for those who came after and have inspired many, including our 44th President.
