Introduction

Falling in love, true meaningful love is one of the most wonderful feelings in life. And for many there is another thing for sure; get comfortable in a relationship and you begin to gain unwanted pounds. So, why does that always seem to be the case? Then, the two of you get serious and the next thing you know, you are trying frantically to shed off those extra 30-40 pounds before the wedding. Unfortunately studies indicate that especially women have a tendency to gain more and faster than men once they are in a relationship, and even faster if they take the dive to move in together. So is your boyfriend really to blame, or is it just the way we are made?

Eating Habits Evolve

When you were single, you probably just ate quickly and kept going. You were also most likely going out with groups of peers and being much more active while either eating or afterward. Perhaps you were even more conscious about not wanting to gain weight and exercised more. But now you have evolved into a relationship, and as such will probably eat almost 33% more food than you did before!

Now that you have the company of that special someone, the tendency to eat more and longer becomes more exaggerated. Now, it's just the two of you and 'hanging out' with the crowd just doesn't seem to matter anymore. The pure enjoyment of sitting around and simply talking about life after a heavy meal, while having a favorite drink and dessert becomes the evening of choice to while away the moments for many. As humans, we have learned to bond over food and it has thus become almost an intimacy among our relationships. Then, let's add on the fact that women have a tendency to deal with the stresses of a relationship with food, reaching for the chocolate or simply those high-sugar and fatty foods to soothe the stress. Not to mention that being a woman, you won't burn your calories the same way a man does.

So, overall, we as women are simply doomed to gain weight once we fall in love. Or so it seems.

Better Choices – Better Relationships

During those initial days-months-years of a relationship, things can happen quickly and seemingly without cause. We can become overwhelmed by the feelings to the point that we tend to forget about the importance of our health. We may lose sleep, or get too much. We may quit exercising, or exercise too much. We may eat less or even more. Depending on your body system, metabolism and emotional makeup entering into a relationship can affect not only your weight but your overall health.

While eating is certainly a necessity, over-eating or trying to eat as much as your mate is not a good idea. As previously noted, a woman metabolism for burning calories is just not the same as a man. And, the same goes for drinking. Most alcoholic beverages are full of sugar and empty calories which cause excessive weight quickly. Use caution when indulging in good food and drink, considering the cost to your health.

Making the proper choices during your relationship will make for a much healthier relationship; one that you can truly enjoy without the fears of too much or little of anything detrimental to your health. There are plenty of good nutritional supplements that can help you deal with any extra stresses you may feel, and natural weight loss supplements if you still find that over-eating is still a favorite pastime. The key here though is not to use supplements as a crutch to continue bad habits, but to help you develop better ones.

If you enjoyed specific activities before your relationship, continue them and try to include your new love. Try exercising together; it's more fun and more enjoyable. Alternate your favorite meals or restaurants; such as do not always hit the BBQ joint but maybe the salad bar instead.

So the conclusion of the matter is.....
Women experience many different things throughout their life that can cause them to gain or lose weight. Unfortunately, falling in love and diving head-first into a meaningful relationship can be one of these many things. Statistics and studies show that we eat more food in a relationship, upwards of 1/3 more than our normal intake. We slow down our exercise routine, probably because it interferes with our time with our new love. And, of course, new worries and stresses will probably make us eat even more to either drown our sorrows or celebrate our joys.

Any way we look at it, taking control of the situation is definitely to our advantage...in more ways than just gaining weight. Learn to enjoy your new found love, share your happiness but keep your senses and your health. Life and love are good.
