"Trying to Fill an Empty Heart"

Student: John Kenneth Tamayor

School: Martin Luther King High School, Riverside

Grade: Senior

Description: Tamayor said he took a picture of a friend wearing a jacket. Inside it he drew a heart filled with drugs, cigarettes, a syringe and a beer bottle. The head is left off because "you're not thinking straight when you make bad decisions," he said.

"Carl the 5th"

Student: Audrey Alexander

School: Woodcrest Christian High School, Riverside

Grade: Junior

Description: Alexander drew a portrait of Carl Pongs, a close friend. Pongs, a stickler for detail, made sure every element was perfect. Alexander said she drew layer upon layer to get that smooth-skin look.

"Striving for Perfection"

Student: Joyce Sauro

School: Roosevelt High School, Eastvale

Grade: Senior

Description: As Sauro describes it, a wooden doll stands in front of a mirror and is trying to carve herself to fit society's beauty standards. The doll has face masks, wigs, clothes and a carving tool. Sauro said her message is that people are perfect no matter how they look.

"I Am Trash"

Student: Darren Tamayo

School: Vista Murrieta High School

Grade: Senior

Description: The piece shows a seashore scene with trash and washed-up marine animals. The artist's head is coming out of the water, which is turning brown. Tamayo said was inspired by a marine biology class and became concerned about ocean pollution.

"The Dead Weather"

Student: Jesse Falk

School: Vista Murrieta High School

Grade: Sophomore

Description: Falk sketched a gig poster of the rock band The Dead Weather using hand-lettered fonts. He said he added lines to give texture to the figure of a woman with a skull and crossbones and lightning through her head to show energy.
