Wymering Manor

Not only is it said to be the most haunted place in Portsmouth, Wymering Manor, on OId Wymering Lane, it is thought to be the spookiest in all of Hampshire.
The oldest building in the city, it is said to be home to 20 ghosts - including a bloody nun, the ghost of Jane Austin's brother and Reckless Roddy.
Paranormal activity is said to include sudden drops in temperature, children whispering, furniture moving and apparitions.

St Thomas Street

On this street in Old Portsmouth a ghostly woman was said to stare in through the upstairs window and a ghostly presence would cause people to move aside on the staircase.
The sound of a heavy body crashing from the top to the bottom of the stairs was also said to be an ‘everyday happening’.

Landport Hall, Commercial Road

A former theatre in Portsmouth, before the New Theatre Royal was created, it was said to be haunted.
With actors in the 1850s claiming to spot a ghostly apparition at the end of each performance.

Fort Widley

This Victorian Fort, on top of Portsdown Hill, dates back to the 1860s and is said to be haunted by the spirit of a little boy.
He reportedly haunts the fort's tunnels. It is said that he was a drummer and was being pursued along the parade ground by a superior officer and fell to his death down the spiral staircase.
Rapid footsteps have been heard running along the tunnels.

Naval base

This is another legend that dates back to the Victorian era - the Lady of the Harbour is a ghost that is said to haunt the area around the naval base.
According to the legend, she is the ghost of a naval widow and makes whimpering noises.
The Lady of the Harbour is often seen in dark corners or down alleyways

Victoria Park

According to British Paranormal The Vanishing Man is a spectre that appears in Victoria Park - always when the light is low.
He is dressed in a rain coat, is described as being thin and tall as well as carrying a suitcase - he approaches you before disappearing into thin air.
The Vanishing Man was reportedly first sighted in 1942 and was thought to be a German spy.

Fratton

According to ancient folklore, the area now known as Fratton - but previously was called Froddington - was haunted by a witch.
The Froddington Witch was said to make a high pitched whistle, which would mesmerise passers-by, when spotted and then make its escape.
So if you ever hear any whistling in Fratton, this could be why...

Arundel Street

Arundel Street is said to be haunted by the spirit of a vagabond who was beaten to death in 1904. Known as the Stinking Cleg, the ghost is said to be accompanied by an overpowering smell of rotting flesh and brine.
So if you've ever smelt anything funky on Arundel Street... it could have been the Stinking Cleg.
