When the Man in Black reveals he can't be killed

Okay, so first off...Man in Black? Are you sure we're not watching Lost? That being said, Ed Harris is one nasty cowboy. He's been going to Westworld for a LONG time, so it's safe to say he knows the rules better than anyone. He can do whatever he wants to the Hosts (including murder and rape), and he can't be harmed (better save those bullets, Teddy). He might have seen one too many rodeos at this point as I'm willing to bet 30 years of fantasy roleplay are going to do a number on one's psyche. His motivations remain to be seen, but this sequence definitely sets the tone. The humans want to play God, and in Westworld they can. Bring on the ethics and morality discussion.

And the Hosts are forced to relive the same day over...and over

Talk about deja vu! Dolores and her fellow Hosts are forced to relive the same day over and over again, even if it's filled with unspeakable horrors. If there's any mercy in this situation, it's that their minds are wiped clean every night so they won't have any memory of tragedy or violence. But it still raises some questions. Should we feel empathy for robots? I feel you'd have to be a monster not to after watching this show. But if their emotions are literally programmed into them, what's real? How should we feel watching? So many questions!

When the Sheriff malfunctions

The whole scene between the Sheriff and the Newcomers was eerie and bizarre, because while it might be easy for the humans to pretend they're playing a game, the fact that their android counterparts could easily malfunction and do God knows what is a very real possibility. The Hosts have been programmed, but who's to say a misfiring a chip couldn't cause very real ramifications? It's clear the show is on its way to exploring this.

4

Dolores' father goes "off script"

Another creepy AF scene, this time between Dolores' dear, sweet father and the creator himself, Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins). Poor Peter found a picture in the sand of a very modern, and hence very foreign, girl in a city and it caused him to spiral into an existential abyss. The conversation between the two quickly devolved into a threatening and shocking reveal that perhaps the Hosts remember a bit more of their "lives" than their creators thought possible.

5

Dolores kills the fly!

Almost immediately after her endearing and earnest speech to her makers that she loves her world and she would basically never harm a fly...well, she harms a damn fly! It had been teased throughout the episode that the hosts can't harm living creatures, even something as insignificant as a fly, so they basically just stand there as the pesky creatures land on them and do their will. It appears that like her (previous) father, Dolores' journey to self-awareness is only just beginning.
