Here are 15 of the best moments from the 70th Tony Awards:
Opening number
James Corden was an absolute delight throughout the whole night, and while he was constantly on top of his game, the opening sequence was spectacular. From the company of Hamilton introducing Corden, to the latter doing a beautiful and hilarious medley of some of the most beloved musicals, to the final segment when the 2016 Musical Acting nominees gathered on stage to encourage children to pursue the arts and their dreams:
"To the theatre kids from any place with stardust in their eyes, of every colour, class, and race, and face, and shape, and size, to the boys and girls, transgender too, to every broadway would-be, don't wonder if this could be you, it absolutely could be!"
SPEECHES! GOOD GOD, THE SPEECHES!
The Tonys have a reputation for having some of the most touching speeches, but this year they completely outdid themselves. Every single one was that much moving, soul-stirring and uplifting, and even though they made us bawl our eyes out, some have made history:
"We chase the melodies that seem to find us
Until they're finished songs and start to play
When senseless acts of tragedy remind us
That nothing here is promised, not one day.
This show is proof that history remembers
We lived through times when hate and fear seemed stronger;
We rise and fall and light from dying embers, remembrances that hope and love last longer
And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside."
(Lin-Manuel Miranda)
All the Trump digs
From Corden's message that Trump wants to build a wall around the theatre because of its diversity, to Nathan Lane joking that winning a Tony in front of hundreds-millions of people is the most important thing in the scheme of life and it's the thing he's learned at Trump University, to the Hillary/Clinton skit performed by Glenn Close as Hillary Clinton in "A Clinton Line" and Andrew Rannells as Donald Trump in "The Book of Moron" that blew everyone away.
POTUS and FLOTUS introducing the company of Hamilton
It's no surprise that POTUS and FLOTUS were the ones to introduce this year's Tony Award Winner musical. They've been huge supporters of the show, who gave an absolutely breathtaking performance! As expected! The 16 Tony nominated musical (record) performed a medley of "History Has Its Eyes On You" and "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)", from which they dropped the use of the muskets out of respect for the victims in Orlando.
Barbra Streisand returning to the Broadway stage
Barbra Streisand returned to Broadway for the first time since 1964 and presented the Tony for Best Musical to... HAMILTON! No surprise there, really! The show ended with the 11 time Tony winning cast of Hamilton singing a wonderful rendition of "The Schuyler Sisters".
