R.L. Stine writes the titles first, then comes up with a plot. He makes an outline of the entire book, chapter by chapter, before he really starts to write. It takes him around 3 weeks to write a Goosebumps novel. When he’s done with the book, he gives the manuscript to his wife, who is an editor, to read.

Before he was a horror writer, Stine was known as “Jovial Bob Stine” and wrote comedy.

One of Stine’s favourite horror novels is Something Wicked This Way Comes (Ray Bradbury). It tells the story of two boys who get tangled in the nightmares of a mysterious traveling carnival. Stine started reading Ray Bradbury’s work when he was 9/10 years old and apparently says that Bradbury was the first writer to inspire him.

R.L. Stine tried collaborating with his wife but they worked too differently. Stine prefers to work from the beginning whereas his editor wife tends to work from the middle. The collaboration ended with Stine's wife locking him in a closet. They decided not to collaborate anymore.
