King, an outdoor cat living in the Brighton Beach area of Adelaide, Australia, has become so popular with locals that he's almost becoming an urban legend, although, of course, he is often seen and is definitely documented and real. He started roaming further out toward the beach a few months ago, but he always comes back to his owners when he gets hungry. Although he initially was irritated by it, King's owner, Mike, says he's glad that people look after his cat so well while he's out and usually call the number on his ID tag to try and get him back home.

At first I was a bit annoyed, but I thought, ‘It is nice that people do that.’

King is apparently very friendly to strangers in return. One visitor to Brighton Beach, Sue Lassock, reported that he spent 45 minutes playing with her.

He’s a lovely cat – he’s very friendly. If he doesn’t feel like people patting him, he’ll move on.

And King's best friend, 8-year-old Milly believes he's a very special cat indeed and that it's always amusing when people try to pet him.

I find it a bit strange because most cats are scared of water but there’s a lot of it here. Normally, if we’re here with him, a lot of people come and ask if we can pat your cat – it’s just so funny.
