Thursday, February 16, 2017, has been declared "A Day Without Immigrants" by protesters nationwide. This strike by and for immigrants has been designated as a time for immigrants to stop working, stop shopping, and stop sending their kids to school as a means of demonstrating their importance in our country.

Many businesses are also closing in solidarity with or because of the Day Without Immigrants. At least 55 restaurants in Washington, D.C. have closed for the day or are donating part of today's profits to organizations that assist the Latino community. And two schools in the Washington, D.C. area also closed for the boycott.

One restaurant owner, French immigrant Ahmad Erfani closed his baker Le Caprice for the day in solidarity with the boycott.

Mostly the people who work here are immigrants. We spoke with them, they thought it's good for solidarity with the others to not work. They are hard workers. I am not happy when I see they are not very happy these days, because it is difficult.

Ahmad Erfani

This protest is in response to both the Trump administration's immigration ban and the 680 people arrested in immigration raids across the country last week. According to LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis, immigrants contribute to about 40% of LA County's GDP of $300 billion per year. Speaking of the strike, she said:

It's incumbent on us to be brave, which we're prepared to do, to step up; to say to him, not in my house; not in my county; not in my state.
