Union
Union
Union is one of Pasadena’s most famous restaurants. Head chef, Bruce Kalman, is best known for being a master pickle maker but everything on his menu is a twist on an Italian classic. The Spaghetti Alla Chitarra and the Squid Ink Garganelli are favorites of locals but even the table bread and butter is noteworthy.
Saladang Song
Saladang Song
Nestled away just a few blocks from downtown Pasadena, Saladang Song offers Thai food with a street-food spin. Try the ka-nom-jeen-gang-kiew-wann (rice vermicelli with fish balls in green curry) or tod-mon-kao-pohd (sweet corn cakes with cucumber salad) and hah-mok-pla (fish-curry cake steamed in a banana leaf) or stop by early for Thai breakfast.
Pie & Burger
Pie & Burger
This classic California burger joint is the perfect spot to grab a bite after a hike or some particularly strenuous shopping. Specializing in, you guessed it, pies and burgers, the tiny diner excels at both. The seasonal fruit pies are their most loved offering but order it early before they run out.
The Raymond
The Raymond
The Raymond is a hidden gem, litteraly. Most Pasadenans drive rigth by it without noticing the craftsman style building but what it lacks a facade, it makes up for with critically acclaimed food. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get a reservation if you’re only in town for the holidays but we recommend you stop in for cocktails. Their cocktail menu is full of updated classics like The Chocklatier, a manhattan with chocolate chocolate rum, and fun new drinks like the Sex Panther, named for Paul Rudd’s cologne in “Anchor Man.”
Roma Market
Roma Market
So, you really love trying new foods but you’re running low on time. We get it. There’s tons to see and do in Pasadena. That’s why we love Roma Market. It’s a tiny Italian market that boasts a variety of fancy cheeses (yes, that’s what the smell is) and the single best sandwich in the city. Famously wrapped in pink paper, “The Sandwhich” is simply thin slices of italian meats, provolone cheese and a drizzle of olive oil on a fresh roll. It’s classic, delicious and goes for just over $5. Dash into the market, tilt your cap to Rosario, the crusty but lovable owner, grab a sandwhich and be on your way.
Lucky Boy Burgers
Lucky Boy Burgers
Another classic Pasadena Burger joint, Lucky Boy Burgers offer generous portions, affordable prices and zuchinni fries. Stop by late at night for the quintessential Lucky Boy burger or have a breakfast burrito in the a.m.
Tarantinos
Tarantinos
A favorite among locals for it’s traditional italian offerings, Tarantinos is a great spot for large portions and a lot of people. Chow down on their pizzas, pastas and garlic knots and you won’t be disappointed. Be warned that it’s cash only.
Congregation Ale House
Congregation Ale House
Go to Congregation Ale House if what you mean when you say “dinner” is “beer.” The local chain has an impressive selection of beers and some nice happy hour offerings. The food is elevated bar fare like the Grilled Artichoke and the Housemade Brewpub Pretzel.
