On the morning of November 15th, the locals in Halifax, Nova Scotia, saw this as they made their way to work...

Someone had tied winter coats to street poles, with hand-written tags attached to them

2

Tara Smith-Atkins worried about what the city's homeless would do in the cold, had hung the coats for them to pick up as they needed.

3

Smith-Atkins said her daughter and her friends really learned the value of warmth, when “we got back in the car after an hour on the street, they were all freezing and crying for the heater to be on and complaining because they were cold. And they were bundled up.”

Nova Scotia is on the Eastern coast of Canada and has bitter cold winters. Last year they saw several harsh snowstorms.

The activity was part of Smith-Atkins daughter's birthday

The family spent months collecting different items for the homeless, including jackets, scarves and gloves.

"The bags just started flowing in" said Smith-Atkins of the community response.

6

Smith-Atkins is already planning next years coat drive. She plans to try and add five dollar gift cards to provide at least one hot meal.

"I am not lost! If you are stuck out in the cold, please take me to keep warm!"the tags read.
