Archaeologists believe they have found a hand dug escape tunnel in Ponar, Lithuania.

The site of the dig

Ponar was the site of a makeshift concentration camp, and a burial ground for those who had already been exterminated.

Ponar is now a monument to those who fell to the Nazis there

This is a huge find for archaeologists and historians alike. They are finally able to corroborate how prisoners may have escaped. The dig used sonar and x-ray technology to discover the tunnel.

An aerial view of the site, and a picture of the sonar used to find the tunnel.

A documentary about the tunnel will air next year, along with the tunnel they've discovered another burial pit containing the ashes of approximately 7,000 people.

It is estimated that 100,00 people were killed at Ponar, including 70,000 Jews. Hopefully this tunnel proves that at least some of them successfully escaped.

These memorial stones now stand at Ponar in honor of the victims.
