Ari Aster's debut is a stylistic nightmare which takes the viewer deep into the heart of a mental illness in a story of a family dealing with grief and bizarre legacy. Don't expect many jump scares, but be prepared for many sleepless nights.

After establishing the Saw universe, director James Wan (Aqua-man) created another world of scares. The film didn't bring anything new to the haunted house genre, but instead delivered a well developed world, and even spawned a few sequels, spin-offs, prequels and a huge world wide fan base.

A couple discovers their boy is traveling to astral dimensions in his sleep, and might be bringing back evil spirits with him. Just like the Conjuring, Insidious was followed by a sequel, prequels, and maybe more in the future.

Before they became the creative team behind Marvel's Doctor Strange, director Scott Derrickson and author/screenwriter C. Robert Cargill created this nightmare. Ethan Hawke stars as a true crime writer who moves into a house where a horrible crime took place, without telling his family members about it. Soon he finds snuff footage which helps his story, but disturbs his family in many horrific ways. Sinister is a very realistic film which was followed by a sequel which was not as successful as the first.

Australian director Jennifer Kent's debut feature film became a huge success after its premiere at Sundance festival. Babadook is based on Monster, a short film by Kent, and tells the ancient story of a monster in the close. While not highly original, the film is disturbing, gripping and received many accolades from critics and viewers alike.

Stephen King's monumental masterpiece was already adapted for TV in 1990, but the films (part 1 came out in 2017 and part 2 in 2019) are on a whole different level. While the series was on the verge of campy, the films are much more realistic, and the supernatural is much more scary. Pennywise the clown haunts the town of Derry, Maine once in 27 years and feeds off little children until a group of teenager outcasts, calling themselves The Losers Club, set out to destroy the ancient evil once and for all.

Jordan Peele was known as half of the comedic duo Key & Peele, but after his directorial debut Get Out (2017) was released, he was hailed as one of the best horror creators of modern times. His sophomore film brings Academy Award winner, and acclaimed actress Elisabeth Moss to the horror genre in a story about a family who has to deal with a deep rooted fear - their own lethal doppelgängers.

Another debut, Robert Eggers periodic tale about a family dealing with terrifying supernatural forces brings a new edge to a familiar trope, and the result is both fresh and frightening. The film received many acclaims in the Sundance film festival and won the best director prize.

Another film which was produced by James Wan AND landed the director a super-hero film deal (Shazam!). Swedish director David F. Sandberg began his career by making short films which gained popularity and drove him to develop Lights Out from a short by the same name. The story deals with a young girl with fear of the dark, who has to face it when she discovers her brother has the same issue, and that there might be a very horrible reason for it.

On the verge between a thriller and a horror film, Don't Breathe twists the home invasion genre and brings a new point of view on good vs. evil. Director Fede Alvarez was hailed as a fresh new voice, and Don't Breathe shows just how much.
