The television world is embracing the world of costume dramas - especially when they are based on real events in history.

The White Queen and White Princess are mini series based on Philippa Gregory's novels about the War of the Roses (fun fact: some of these real life events inspired some of the Game of Thrones plot points!).

So, this is your crash course in what you need to know about the world of Henry VII and the powerful women that surrounded him.

So what led up to the events of The White Princess?

1.

First, there was a king named Henry (VI) who was of the Lancaster family. He went mad.
2.

Then, Edward of York (the rival family) took over and became King Edward IV.
3.

After bloody war over who got to wear the crown, Edward died, leaving two young sons as his heirs.
4.

Edward's brother Richard was named Protector over the sons, but instead ended up taking the crown for himself.
5.

Not too long after this, Henry Tudor (also of the Lancaster family with a claim to the throne), who was in exile, came back to claim the throne.
6.

Henry defeated Richard by killing him in the battlefield and became King Henry VII.
7.

It was then decided that he would marry Elizabeth of York, the late King Edward's daughter, to unite the two families.
