President Trump once again threated to let the government shut down during a meeting this Tuesday. The revived threat comes as Congress still cannot agree to a spending bill that also deals with several immigration issues, including funding of a border wall.
Trump stated that “If we have to shut it down because the Democrats don’t want safety, let’s shut it down.” These comments come as both Republicans and Democrats are close to nearing some sort of deal to make sure the government stays funded for a possible two years.
But the current plan that Republicans are working on getting passed does not include any sort of immigration or border wall deal. Instead, the plan, one that takes a different road than the president, looks for a vote that focuses on funding the military for a full year.
Several Democrats have stated that they will not support any sort of spending bill that increases military spending without also increasing domestic spending. And any spending bill that comes to the Senate will need Democratic support so as to overcome any sort of possible filibuster.
