During a speech at the White House, President Trump announced that he has ordered the Justice Department to propose new regulations on bump stocks. These devices can convert semiautomatic weapons into ones that function more like fully-automatic ones. Such devices made headlines after they were used during the massacre in Las Vegas.
Trump stated that he has ordered Attorney General Jeff Sessions to create regulations in a step to help prevent future mass shooting incidents. President Trump stated that “We cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make a difference.”
In the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was tasked with reviewing if it could potentially regulate the sales and purchasing of bump stock devices. The Las Vegas shooter had twelve rifles modified with such devices.
The National Rifle Association announced late last year that it would support stronger restrictions on these such devices.
