North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has invited President Trump to a meeting so the two world leaders can sit and discuss the North Korean nuclear program. This comes after the two leaders have had a war of words since President Trump took office.
The White House responded and stated that President Trump had accepted the invitation to a meeting. The invitation came via Chung Eui-yong, a South Korean official working as an intermediary. The meeting between the leaders is planned to take place sometime this May.
Speaking from the White House, Mr. Chung told reporters Kim Jong-un “expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible,” and that after his meeting at the White House, Trump agreed to “meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization.”
No sitting American president has ever held a meeting with a North Korean leader, and many consider this move to be a large gamble on the part of the United States. Once major concern many have lies with the fact that leaders don't normally sit to meet before an agreement is hashed out. Former President Bill Clinton had the opportunity to meet with Kim's father, but pulled out upon advice from his advisors.
Another concern is that the State Department is hemorrhaging experienced diplomats and advisors, especially with regards to the Asian region. Trump himself has stated that he would not fall into the same trap as previous president's by being sucked into protracted negotiations.
