Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster will be resigning as national security advisor to President Trump. The General will be replaced by former United States ambassador to the United Nations, John R. Bolton.
Officials close to the situation stated that General McMaster will also be retiring from the military upon his departure. His resignation has been in the works for some time as President Trump wants to secure his national security team before a possible meeting with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un
General McMaster has struggled to control the White House, especially with a president that is not accustomed to a military level of discipline. Officials note that the departure of General McMaster was a mutual one.
In February tensions between President Trump and General McMaster rose after McMaster spoke at conference in Munich, Germany. During the event General McMaster stated that the evidence of Russian interference in the Unites States election was beyond dispute.
A senior official noted that General McMaster has expressed concerns about President Trump's sudden and unexpected decision to meet with Kim Jong-un.
