7 Scots who have played club football in Germany

Scotland international striker Alan McInally joined Bayern Munich from Aston Villa in 1989. He played 40 games for Bayern, scoring ten goals.

Paisley-born midfielder Brian O'Neil joined VfL Wolfsburg from Aberdeen in 1998, following spells at Nottingham Forest and Celtic. He scored 3 goals in 50 appearances before joining Derby County in 2000.

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee joined Hamburg from Aberdeen for £330,000 ahead of the 1984/85 season but struggled with injuries. 30 appearances, 7 goals and 16 months later he was back in Scotland with Celtic.

Paul Lambert joined Borussia Dortmund from Motherwell in 1996, playing just one season for Die Borussen but turning in a man-of-the-match performance as Dortmund won the Champions League Final with a 3-1 win over holders Juventus. He joined Celtic for £2 million shortly after.

Born in Dortmund but classed as a Scot, Vince Mennie played 29 times for Köln between 1982 and 1986 before spells at Dundee, Falkirk, Forfar and Wuppertaler.

Murdo MacLeod was the first of a trio of Scots to turn out for Dortmund, joining from Celtic in the summer of 1987. He made 103 appearances, finding the net four times, before returning to Scotland with Hibernian in 1990.
