Five clubs that defied odds and lifted titles

Ssh, don't say anything. If someone asks about it, keep your trap shut.

Leicester City can win the 2015/16 Premier League.

Crap. Someone said it. Considered it jinxed.

I've been saying for months that sooner or later Leicester will drop off. In November I said it. In December I said it. January, too. It's now February and Leicester City are still top of the Barclay's Premier League. They've lost just two matches all season and last weekend thumped closest rivals Manchester City - in Manchester - 3-1.

Montpellier HSC, Ligue 1 (2012)

It seems ages ago that PSG weren't dominating French football but in 2012 Montpellier, promoted to Ligue 1 only three seasons earlier, won their very first title on the last day of the season with a 2-1 away win at Auxerre. Had they lost then the trophy would have gone to Paris.

2

Deportivo de La Coruña, La Liga (2000)

Deportivo spent most of the 1970s and 80s in the Spanish second division, winning their first and only title in 2000, and thus breaking the domination of Barcelona and Real.

3

Bursaspor, Süper Lig (2010)

If Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray or Beşiktaş don't win the Turkish Süper Lig then someone must've crossed the streams. Never cross the streams. Bursaspor crossed those streams in 2010 and became the only club other than the 'big three' to win the league since Trabzonspor in 1984.

4

FC Twente, Eredivisie (2010)

Ex-England boss Steve McClaren took Twente to their first title at the expense of Ajax, despite the Amsterdam club's +86 goal difference, a feat he tried, and failed, to repeat upon his return to Enschede a few years later.

Wigan Athletic, FA Cup (2013)

Leicester only need to look a little closer to home to find a fairytale comparison. Not quite the same as a gruelling 38-match league campaign but when Wigan lined up against the mighty Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final no one expected anything other than them being systematically swept aside by Roberto Mancini's men. But as was the case the underdog took the spoils. It's interesting to note that even only 2.5 years later none of the players in Wigan's starting XI and on their bench now play for the club.
