The big day is finally here
Thousands of anxious teenagers across Northampton will be tearing open their A-level exam results today.
As the day progresses we will keep this page updated with all the headline figures from the town's schools and the most impressive individual performances.

The Duston School
Fears that reformed exams would affect grades at the Duston School were unfounded - after reporting their best results ever.
A spokeswoman for the school said: "Outcomes have increased across almost every key headline measure, with a rise in the number of students attaining A*-A, A*-B and A*-E passes.
"The number of students achieving the facilitating measure, i.e. three AAB grades or more in three rigorous academic subjects, has almost trebled.
"Six students achieved A*/A grades in three of their A Level pathways.
"A number of our students will be going to prestigious universities such as Durham, Warwick and Leeds. There has also been sustained excellent outcomes in Maths, Further Maths, Sociology, Geography and Physics, which remain the top 5 performing subjects within the Sixth Form."

Hard work pays off for Northampton College
Northampton College students have “reaped the rewards of months of dedication”, with record-breaking A-Level results today.
Students within the A-Level Academy at Northampton College achieved an overall pass rate of 97 per cent. Almost half (45 per cent) of all grades were either A*, A or B – the college’s best ever performance.
Eight subjects - biology, chemistry, geography, art, media, history, psychology and maths - achieved 100 per cent pass rates.
The percentage of overall high grades (A*- C) was 72 per cent, a 31 per cent rise when compared to 2016, and continuing the trend which last year saw Northampton College hailed as the leading college in the East Midlands.
Principal of Northampton College, Pat Brennan-Barrett, said: “We are delighted to have seen another exceptional performance in A Levels. We saw a significant improvement in grades last year so to have followed that up with an equally outstanding set of results this time around is especially pleasing.
“We set high expectations of our students, making sure that they always attended their classes regularly and punctually and instilling a culture of hard work and determination. I am thrilled to see our students reap the rewards of months of dedication.
“We have increased the amount of support that was available for students to keep them on track and I am proud of our staff who have worked so hard to support their students throughout the year. Their success will provide students with a solid foundation for their continuing studies and future career progression.”
Abbeyfield School's record rise
Abbeyfield School students celebrated another record breaking year with a rise in the number of top grades.
Half of all the students at the school in Mere Way achieved at least one grade between A* and B, while the very top A* to A grades went up by five per cent.
Principal David Powell said “I am delighted with another great set of results that reflect all of the hard work and effort that has been put in again this year by both staff and students; our overall results have improved yet again with students, on average, scoring a third of a grade more across the board.
"The number of Abbeyfield students that go off to prestigious Russell Group universities continues to rise and we are privileged to be able to work with such a wonderful group of young people”.
Special mentions go out to Sanjeet Kaur who got A*, A*, A* in Maths, Further Maths and Physics; impressively, Sanjeet got full marks in her maths A Level and will be taking up a place at Imperial College, London. Other mentions need to go to Olivia Taylor, A* A* B; Callum Slinn, A* A* A; Poppy Eccles, A*A B; Richmond Rosales, A* A C; Gabriella Teriaca A* A* B and Joshua Bastow, A B C.

Oxford awaits Sponne School pupil with straight A*s
A Sponne School student will be going to on study engineering at the University of Oxford after bagging himself a straight sweep of A*s.
Despite new specifications and a return to the two year A-Level programme, results at the Towcester school remained "similar" to previous years, it said.
Just under 50 per cent of students gained the highest A* to B grades with all students passing.
Students did particularly well with the very highest grades of A* and A grade with more than a third of all students achieving at least one of these.
Headteacher Iain Massey said: “We are really proud of our students who have done so well in gaining these excellent results.
“It is reassuring that the grades reflect the hard work that students put in and the outstanding teaching and support provided by the staff at Sponne School.
“Well done to all our students, including those who have secured their first choice university places.”
James Odwell achieved A* in all four of his subjects and will be studying engineering at Oxford University in the new academic year.
Tom Massey achieved three A*s and one A, while Nick Green, Luis Lopes, Hal Pilkington and Beatrix Wagner all gained one A* and two A grades.
In addition to this, Natasha Partridge, Elliot Hutton, Elena Warner, Matthew Wheeler and Ruth Wright all achieved the equivalent of three A grades.
Victoria Austin, head of sixth form, said: “I am always amazed by the high standards our students achieve and want to congratulate them on their excellent results.
“I am so pleased for them and wish them all the best in the future.”

Students at Northampton School for Boys are reflecting on an outstanding set of A-Level results.
Attainment highlights include well over half of all A-Level entries being graded A*, A or B, thirty-three students achieving an A or A* grade average over at least three subjects in Year 13, with one student achieving four straight A* A-Level grades and three other students securing three straight A* grades with an additional A grade in their fourth subject.
Four students will be taking up offers at Oxbridge and ten students will be taking up places at leading music conservatoires across the country.
Richard Bernard, Headmaster of NSB, said: "The 2018 A-Level results are very strong in terms of expected progress against national targets and in terms of levels of overall attainment.
"These excellent results pay testament to the work ethic and ability of this exceptional cohort of students and to the incredibly hard work of the staff."
Deirdre Kennedy, the assistant head and director of 6th form, said: "Once again our extensive advice and guidance programme is paying dividends.
"Over 200 Year 13 students received university offers – over 50 per cent of which to the very best ‘Russell Group’ universities inclusive of gaining places at these prestigious universities on the most competitive courses such as PPE, medicine and law - and all but a handful have been accepted at their university of choice."
Mr Bernard added: "The Year 13 cohort backed up their outstanding academic success with exceptional achievements outside of the classroom in sport, music, dance and drama.
"They were a group of students who had a hugely positive influence on the school, embracing the vast range of opportunities that the school had to offer as well as operating as excellent role models for our younger students. I wish all of our leavers the very best of luck in their future."
Standout Year 13 performers for A Level included Eamonn Everitt (four A* and one A); Jude McClay, Rasheed Miladi, Stuart Wilkes (three A* one A; Eleanor Bevan, Deniz De Barros (two A* and two A).
A* and Cambridge success for students at Northampton Academy
Students and staff at Northampton Academy are celebrating their A-Level success today with three of its students achieving three A*s in their results, a first for the academy, and many others going on to their first choice of universities.
High achievers included Grace Ojo who was awarded A*s in maths, further maths and chemistry and an A in physics. She has accepted a place at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge to read chemical engineering.
Ayotunde Adeeyo, the academy’s head boy, who received A*s in maths, further maths and physics and an A in chemistry. He is going to study physics at University College, London.
Petra Palminha who was awarded A*s in English, Spanish and Portuguese and a B in psychology. She will go to the University of Nottingham to read Spanish and international media communication.
Georgia Sheppard who achieved an A* in biology and As in maths and chemistry. She will study pharmacy at the University of Nottingham.
Nat Parnell, Principal of Northampton Academy, said: "Each year our sixth form grows in strength as our students become even more ambitious for their futures.
"It is a genuine pleasure to see students achieve their very best and be able to take up places at the most prestigious universities.
"It is particularly pleasing to see both boys and girls perform strongly in maths and the sciences and being accepted on some of the toughest degree courses.
"It is testament to their hard work and to the support and encouragement of their parents and our staff that they achieved these results."
Northampton School for Girls
This year, nearly 200 students sat A-Level and BTEC exams at Northampton School for Girls with 65 per cent of students achieving at least one A*-B or equivalent grades.
The school had its highest ever results in art, dance and history.
Special mention was reserved for Erin Porter and Bella Smith who both achieved three A* grades. Erin will go on to the University of Oxford to study geography and Bella to Warwick to read history.
Other successes include Clarrice Adams who achieved two A* and one A grade and Emily Butt and Shanelie Fernandes with one A* and two A grades respectively.
Headteacher Julia Harley said: "I am so proud of our students and their achievements. These are great results and there are so many wonderful success stories that lie beneath these statistics.
"What impresses me the most is that we are enabling our students to make real and sustained progress in our Sixth Form.
"They have been given a huge amount of support by their teachers and parents, but the success they have achieved really comes down to them.
"This reaffirms our strong ethos of ‘respect for self, respect for others and respect for learning’.
"My biggest pleasure is knowing that so many of these students will now be able to access their chosen destinations, whether that will be university, apprenticeships or a career. I wish them all the best."
Malcolm Arnold Academy
Malcolm Arnold Academy has seen an increase in students achieving the very best grades in their A-Levels this year, with 100 per cent of maths students securing a prestigious A*.
Nicola Koncarevic, head of school at Malcolm Arnold Academy, said: "We’ve seen impressive results across the sciences, with particularly strong performances within biology, applied science and sociology.
"Once again, our students have also performed well in languages, the arts and in business studies.
"We are delighted to see our students off to study at top Russell Group universities, as well as start their working careers. We are very proud of their incredible hard work and efforts."
Among the successful students celebrating was Aryna McMullen, who has secured her place at Keele University to study medicine.
Aryna, who achieved an A* in maths, two As in biology and Russian and a C in music, said: "I have been so nervous the past few weeks waiting for my results, but the wait was worth it! I can’t wait to focus on my new studies in September.”
Fellow student, Eloise Borderick, can also be proud of her success after achieving an A* in maths an A in economics, and a B in religious studies.
Eloise is now planning to study maths at Birmingham University.
Alima Lima has also assured her dream of studying English literature at the University oif Nottingham after obtaining an A* in English literature and a B in sociology.
She said: "I am delighted to secure these results after all of my hard work and dedication to my studies. The hard work has definitely paid off."
Other top performers were Thomas Cocking and Jesse Connor, who will both go on to their chosen university.
Head boy Thomas, who achieved a distinction in sport, an A in psychology and a C in biology, will now study sports science at Coventry University.
Thomas, who is also a scholar of the school’s football academy, run in partnership with Rushden & Diamonds Football Club, said: "Malcolm Arnold Academy has helped me to achieve the very best set of results for me to pursue my career. I cannot thank my teachers enough for their incredible support."
Jesse Connor, who achieved a distinction in health and social care, a distinction in performing arts and a B in psychology, will now study childhood and youth studies at the University of Northampton. She said: "I am so happy! In fact, I am slightly overwhelmed with my results! I am looking forward to starting university in September."
Thomas Becket Catholic School
More than 20 per cent of all grades attained at Thomas Becket Catholic School were A*-A grades, with two thirds of all results secured achieving at least a C or equivalent.
Consequently, a large number of students will now be going on to some of the country’s leading universities to study courses from law to the sciences.
Ciran Stapleton, headteacher, said: “We are so proud of what our students have achieved. They have worked hard to get the top grades they needed in some really difficult qualifications.”
Emily Thomas, for example, completed her A2 qualifications with grades of A, B, C while Patrick Kaminski completed his BTEC qualification with 3 D*, equivalent to 3 A*s. Paulina Luczak and Alina Tudor both attained AAA.
Mr Stapleton added: “What is really pleasing is that so many students haven’t just secured the grades they were aiming for, they have surpassed and exceeded their targets. They really have shown what can be achieved with dedication and belief.”
Mrs Harrison, head of sixth form, added: “While we are deeply proud of the grades that these young people are leaving with, we take just as much satisfaction in knowing that the class on 2018 are going on to the next phase of their lives as responsible and caring individuals.
“They have a strong sense of values and moral purpose. I have no doubt that they will go on to become real assets for their
communities.”
Quinton House School
Sixth form students from Quinton House School are celebrating their A-Level results today.
Grades in maths were particularly outstanding with Joseph Skipper, of Dallington in Northampton, gaining an A* and 100 per cent in his mechanics module.
Joseph will be joined by Jim Warren, who achieved A,B,B in progressing to study mechanical engineering at Nottingham University while top performer Luc Murphy – who achieved an A, A, B – will study international management and German at the University of Bath.
At Quinton House School, it isn’t just about academic success. Students are offered extra-curricular activities in a wide range of areas, including sport, music and drama.
Students recently returned from the World Challenge Expedition to Nepal whilst one Year 10 student, Cleo Martin-Evans, represented England at athletics this summer having won the English schools long jump gold medal.
Tim Hoyle, headmaster of Quinton House School, said: “We are very proud of our students’ achievements and it is a pleasure to celebrate with them today after all their hard work. We are delighted to hear that so many students have secured places at their first-choice universities. We wish them every success in their continued studies and future careers.”
First choices for Kingsthorpe College students
Three quarters of the Kingsthorpe College sixth-formers got a place on their preferred university course on results day.
And a handful of students celebrated excellent individual performances.
Kyle Robinson was awarded two A*s and three As in maths, physics, chemistry, further maths and the extended project.

Nearly half the sixth-form gets a tip top mark at Guilsborough
In another successful year, Guilsborough Academy saw nearly half of all grades in the high A* to B range.
Some of this year's cohort have chosen to continue their studies at university, while others will go on to take up exciting apprenticeship or employment opportunities.
Principal Julie Swales said: “We are proud of how hard our students have worked over the past 2 years, with the support of our staff and their parents.
"We would like to congratulate them for all their achievements."
The school has paid credit to a number of students who obtained a clean sweep of A* and A grades.
These were: Matthew Baker, Jessica O’Brien, Isacc Tramontana, Cora Bancroft and Luke Thompson.
Congratulations were also given to Luke Thompson, who is going to Keele University to study medicine and Cora Bancroft, who is going to the Dyson Institute of Technology to study engineering.
Top performance by the Northampton High School girls
Nearly half of all the girls at Northampton High School were awarded the top A* to A grades in a bumper year at the school.
A* grades, at 21 per cent, were up on last year’s results and five students achieved three or more of the top mark.
Headmistress Dr Helen Stringer paid tribute to the and staff.
She said: "This is a very special day for us all at the high school – seeing the girls celebrating the fruits of their ambition and flair, and sharing their successes with their families and teachers.
"A-Levels are, of course, a passport to the next stage of life’s journey and, with the hugely impressive grades they have earned, the girls will find doors opening for them.
"In today’s dynamic, globalised higher education and employment scene, excellent
exam grades, vital though they are, are just the basic currency.
"Beyond that, a portfolio of additional skills and experiences helps to set each high school student apart from the mainstream."
Red-brick universities await the top performers at Campion School
There were outstanding individual successes at the Campion School in Bugbrooke.
Among them, Mark Potts was awarded an impressive five A*s including one for his extended project.
Mark will go on to study physics at Oxford.
Mark Leyden will head off to study engineering at Cambridge having secured three A*s and one A.
Ellie Ashforth will study psychology at Leicester after getting two A*s and one A.
Steve Guan's two A*s and one A will ensure he will go on to study medicine.
Headteacher Claire Whitmore said: "We are delighted for each and every one of our students.
"They are a superb group of young men and women who fully deserve their success.
"They have worked hard to achieve these excellent results and we are extremely proud of their achievements.
"Knowing the strengths of each student, we are confident they are very well- prepared, both academically and personally, to confidently move on to their chosen further study or employment.
"I know all Campion colleagues join me in wishing each of our Year 13 students all the very best as they progress on to the next exciting stage of their lives and we look forward to hearing about their successes in the future."
