How to exchange the Ryobi replacement knives

Ryobi replacement knives are usually reversible, especially for power planers. In this way, you will get two blades for the price of one. You can easily switch the blade over and use the other side once the knife becomes dull. Ryobi planer blades come in pairs, so you have to reverse them in pairs.

Typically Ryobi blades don't support to sharpen, unlike old hand-planer blades. It will be best to replace them when they appear damaged or chipped. The procedure for removing or attaching the blades on Ryobi planer is different from others. So follow our tips to changing the Ryobi replacement knives by yourself.

We have distributed our tips into two sections. The first one is for the hand planers, and the second one is for thickness planers.

Hand Planers

Step 1. Firstly, maintain a basic safety rule for hand tools, especially for those which comes with a blade. You need to turn off and unplug the planer from the power unit.

Step 2. Now, turn the planer upside down. Then try to secure it as well as possible. Put the tool in a wooden vise if you have one. Tighten the vise enough to hold the device. Never try to put the machine in a metal vise because you can crack the housing.

Step 3. In this step, loosen the three screws which secure the blade. You should check the box because your planer should come with a wrench to do this step. You need just to loosen the screws but do not remove them.

Step 4. Next, look at the direction of the cut and try to make a mental note. Observe it to replicate the tapering of the blades. After that, place the tapered edge of the new knife on the same side as the screw heads. The flat edge will now face to the cutter block.

Step 5. Use a flat-head screwdriver to push the blade out of the blade holder. The flat-head screwdriver should go to the right side. Then remove the old blade gently. To loosen the blade, tap it with a block of wood if necessary.

Step 6. In the final step, slide the new blade. By using the screwdriver, you should orient and center the new knife. Retighten the three screws that you removed earlier. Repeat the same process with the second blade.

Thickness Planers

Step 1. Unplug your planer from the power socket. Then unscrew the two wing nuts which are securing the chip guard to remove it from the infeed side of the machine.

Step 2. Use a screwdriver to loosen the lock bar that is holding the blade in place and turning the two lock bar screws counterclockwise on the side of the machine. When you do this, the blade should spring loaded and pops out. So pull it out of the planer and pull out from the lock bar.

Step 3. In this step, you have to set the lock bar back in place against the cutter head. Then position the blade against the cutter head.

Step 4. To firmly hold the blade in place, you need to tighten the lock screws on the side of the planer. In the end, try to reinstall the chip guard and then tighten the wings screw that is holding it.
