New research conducted by University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Mark Mills suggests that differences between left wing and right wing policies may be psychologically fundamental.
The University conducted a test, where people informed researchers of their political leanings.
They were then shown a number of positive and negative images, and told to memorize as many as they can, and then recall them.
The images they remembered showed whether they were liberal-minded or more conservatively inclined.

In the memory test those who had been identified as left wing remembered more 'positive' than 'negative' images.
