"Save Our Planet!" Pleads Newt Scamander

Deforestation affects many creatures, and it is estimated that more than 20,000 species could become extinct in the next 25 years. This does not bode well for creatures such as Bowtruckles, tigers, gorillas, forest trolls, chimpanzees, and elephants, among others.

The planet's temperature has risen by over one degree Fahrenheit in the last century, causing the ice caps to begin melting at a rapid rate. This has led the sea level to rise by approximately 2.5 inches in the last two decades alone. Many endangered creatures face extinction as a result of this – creatures such as the Kelpie and certain species of deer, turtles, and seals.

The sheer volume of pollution created by humans puts beasts of all kinds across the globe in great peril. Trash, smoke, and vehicle exhaust all contribute to the deterioration of the environment and puts creatures – and us – at risk.​

Overconsumption circles back to deforestation, wherein the act of overconsumption leads to the conversion of forests to non-forest land. However, there is more to it than deforestation. The use of certain animals for human consumption when they are not bred for that purpose leads to their endangerment and eventually their extinction​. This puts beasts like the Billywig and sharks in that very position.

First and foremost, we must continue to insist upon the truth that climate change is real and that, unless we stop it, it will be truly devastating for all of us, humans and creatures alike. Other ways we can help include recycling, conserving water, consuming fewer animal products, and growing our own food when possible. Together, we can keep our planet and its creatures safe.
