Gryffindor x Slytherin

Gryffindor x Slytherin

Pros: While Gryffindors and Slytherins are known to be rivals, they’re really not all that different in terms of desire. They both have a competitive drive and a thirst to prove themselves, so together, they can be unstoppable. Though Slytherins do tend to be a little more risqué when flirting, it's something Gryffindors can find to be both a challenge and an adventure.

Cons: Since the Houses are rivals, there can be a lot of House prejudices running between the two. Small things can become big things very quickly with all that bad blood mucking up the foundation. This is doubled up by the fact that Slytherin’s element is water, where Gryffindor’s is fire, and that in itself could lead to a certain level of incompatibility.

Result: If the two can get past their prejudices, they can be an excellent couple. They’re both driven, so they would have the determination needed to make their relationship work if they wanted. A working Gryffindor/Slytherin relationship would easily prove to be a power couple.

Hufflepuff x Gryffindor

Hufflepuff x Gryffindor

Pros: If Gryffindors are the dreamers and the wanderers, Hufflepuffs are the home. Hufflepuffs tend to be the warm and snuggly partner in the relationship that a Gryffindor can return to after a long day of adventure. Likewise, a Gryffindor is likely to pull a Hufflepuff out of their shell on journeys the likes of which they could never have imagined.

Cons: Gryffindors can be fiery and very temperamental. They can rage and storm unlike any other House (Book 5, anyone?), so they need space to blow off some steam. Hufflepuffs like to fix wounds through touch, which may prove to be a bit of a problem with an angry Gryffindor.

Result: This relationship can be a very harmonious one most of the time, and it’s one that is likely to be very successful. With the loyalty of a Hufflepuff, any storms that arise can pass without hard feelings, and a Gryffindor will be sure to charm their beau with chivalry at every turn.

Ravenclaw x Slytherin

Ravenclaw x Slytherin

Pros: While their motives may be different, both of these Houses strive for excellence. A Slytherin and Ravenclaw pairing would be one filled with intelligent conversations on a range of topics from books to politics to something much more meta. Representing the elements of water and air, respectively, Slytherins and Ravenclaws are able to flow together quite easily.

Cons: Not everything can be perfect, though. Like all relationships, this one would also have its follies. Slytherins through ambition, and Ravenclaws through desire for knowledge, want to be the best; whether that’s in cleverness or otherwise, it can create a bit of tension between the two. Two opposing viewpoints could cause a debate between the two to escalate very quickly into a full-blown argument.

Result: Ravenclaws and Slytherins can make a great couple if they’re willing to work together and be respectful of one another’s views. It’s the difference between a serene breeze on a lazy river and a powerful gust on a raging sea that can make or break this potential relationship.

Gryffindor x Ravenclaw

Gryffindor x Ravenclaw

Pros: When they work, Gryffindors and Ravenclaws can form a “brawn and brains” power couple. They have the brute strength (or determination) and the intellect to initiate and complete any plan they have in mind.

Cons: Ravenclaws, as the element of air, tend to fan the Gryffindor flames into a raging, roaring fire. Ravenclaws vex the short-tempered Gryffindors, while Gryffindors tend to irritate Ravenclaws with their wild desires.

Result: A Gryffindor and Ravenclaw union is probably one of the least successful pairings. It can work if both parties are more on the moderate side of their respective House, but the further to one side of the spectrum they are, the less likely this pairing is to succeed.

Slytherin x Hufflepuff

Slytherin x Hufflepuff

Pros: A Slytherin and Hufflepuff relationship, surprisingly, is one of the most healthy due to the symbiotic nature of the couple. Slytherins are a little more selfish than most and tend to exhibit quite a few traits of self-preservation. They seek glory where a Hufflepuff would be content to keep out of the limelight. They would be likely to want to protect their lover and be selfish about them, which makes their selfishness more selfless.

Cons: Hufflepuffs don’t necessarily have the best track record with Slytherins, which goes back to the House stereotypes and rivalries in place from centuries of bad blood between the Slytherins and the other Houses. It would, therefore, be harder for these two to seek out a relationship with the other.

Result: If they can find each other, a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff would quickly find that they could make an excellent couple. Once a Slytherin was willing to let the Hufflepuff in—which wouldn’t be too difficult considering a Hufflepuff’s loyal and hard-working tendencies—they would find themselves very much suited to their new partner.

Ravenclaw x Hufflepuff

Ravenclaw x Hufflepuff

Pros: There are certain types of Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws who can get along very well with one another. Cedric Diggory and Cho Chang were quite a happy couple before… well, we know what happened. No need to rehash it. The point is that moderates from each House would be able to get along very easily. An easygoing Hufflepuff would warm right up to a clinical Ravenclaw.

Cons: On the contrary, Hufflepuffs who identify with their badger mascot might not be an ideal partner for someone on the Luna side of Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw is known not only for its intellect but also for those who think differently and have a bit of an odd streak.

Result: Since both of these Houses can have such a wide range of individuals, compatibility between them is on more of a case-by-case basis than any other House. Some Hufflepuffs are sweet and full of sunshine, and they might work well with a dreamer. Some Ravenclaws are severe and calculating, and they might find their ideal partner in a fiercer Hufflepuff. Or they might each prefer neither of the presented sides of the spectrum and find a home somewhere in the middle. If your partner works for you, then you might just have found the right key to fit in your lock, and you should keep them close.

Same House

Same House

Gryffindor x Gryffindor

Pros: Who better to keep up with the whims and spontaneity of a Gryffindor than another Gryffindor? Last-minute road trip? On it. Want to play hide-and-go-seek on a midnight picnic date, possibly somewhere that doesn’t permit guests this late? Of course!

Cons: Gryffindors can be very stubborn, so arguments can get heated between these fiery individuals. They wouldn’t be quick to back down, so going to bed angry would be a definite possibility.

Result: If you’re a Gryffindor looking for a fun relationship with a surprise at every turn, another Gryffindor is just the partner for you. If you can both keep your tempers in check, it’ll be smooth sailing for the two of you, and you’ll both enjoy the ride.

Slytherin x Slytherin

Pros: Slytherins are by far the best House when it comes to flirting. A competition of steamy pick-up lines that would make any fan fiction author blush would just be the beginning for a double Slytherin pair. Their wicked sense of humor makes everything more fun for them, and they would delight in any chance to prove themselves, no matter what that might mean.

Cons: Slytherins can be a little selfish, part of their desire for self-preservation, and it could potentially make things a little strenuous. Relationships need a give-and-take.

Result: A double Slytherin relationship is probably the best pairing of any. They would easily understand each other, and they would find a lot of entertainment without much effort at all.

Ravenclaw x Ravenclaw

Pros: A Ravenclaw should always have someone around with whom they can discuss their latest and greatest thoughts and ideas. A union of two Ravenclaws is bound to be one full of intellect and passion. Even if they don’t always agree, they would delight in a heated debate. Winning the debate wouldn’t be nearly as much fun as learning how the other person thinks.

Cons: Obviously not all Ravenclaws are alike, so it would be hard for a more serious type of Ravenclaw to find a good match in someone from the dreamier side of the House. A common love of learning can only get you so far.

Result: Ravenclaws can be good for each other, but even better if their interests align. A Ravenclaw whose focus is in science or mathematics and dislikes fiction may not find their perfect match in a bookworm from their House. It’s a matter of aligning interests with desires for this witty pair.

Hufflepuff x Hufflepuff

Pros: Hufflepuffs are generally easygoing, loyal, and dedicated. Having a partner who is just as dedicated to them as they are to their partner would be rewarding for a Hufflepuff. They value justice and fairness, so their relationships would be full of compromises that make each individual happy.

Cons: Even Hufflepuffs get grumpy sometimes. Angry badger Hufflepuffs are never fun to be around, not even for other Hufflepuffs, and it can be very hard to handle the situation when your partner’s way of trying to make you feel better is snuggling. Would you hug a real badger? Probably not. Probably for the best. Angry Puffs are just the same.

Result: Hufflepuff relationships are usually happy and buoyant, and both parties are always dedicated. While they can get to be a little testy from time to time, their love is sure to persist. Their greatest desire in a relationship would be to make the other happy, so neither would ever have to feel like they’re missing out. Besides, what’s better than a Hufflepuff cuddle party?
