Harry Potter Sorting: Wand Cores

Unicorn Hair:

These cores make the most reliable wands. They are capable of advanced magic and are the most resistant to the dark arts. They are also the most loyal of all cores. They bond extremely well to their first masters.

Therestral Hair:

This wand core is very powerful and rare amongst modern wizards and witches. It can be temperamental, but if it's user is confident in their identity, it will be a strong and reliable core.

Dragon Heartstring:

This core produces wands with the greatest power, that are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types as well, and they bond strongly to their current owners.

Veela Hair:

Veela wands are temperamental, like the creatures they come from. They are considered too unpredictable for a decent wand core in many circles. However, some wizards, particularly those with Veela blood, enjoy their power.

Phoenix Feather:

This is the rarest core type. It is capable of the greatest range of magic, and it shows the most initiative, sometimes acting of it's own accord. These powerful wands have strong and distinctive personalities.

Thunderbird Tail Feather:

Wands with this core, like the birds themselves, are able to sense danger. They can also cast curses on their own, and are known to be protective of their masters as well as very powerful during combat.

Fairy Wing:

This core makes a light, airy wand, and is relatively rare. Hufflepuffs seem drawn to these wands, as they are brilliant at charms and abominable at jinxes and hexes. Not the best for DADA either, but it will make a loyal wand.

Mermaid Scales:

This core is rare to see in modern users, and is particularly good for Charms and Care of Magical Creatures. If it is wielded by a knowledgeable and generous witch or wizard, it will be a strong, stubborn ally for life.

Hypogriff Feather:

This core requires a master that is a noble, proud and honourable as the creature it came from. It is a stubborn core and has been known to explode and backfire if it is ever borrowed or stollen.

Boomslang Venom:

This crystallized venom core is known for it's advanced capabilities with jinxes and hexes. It is not necessarily made for a dark master, but it is certainly well suited to the dark arts, mischief and trickery.

Basilisk Scales:

These wands are very rare due to how rare Basilisks themselves are, not to mention how hard they are to kill. They bond almost exclusively to purebloods and parselmouthes, and are capable of incredibly powerful dark magic.
