Shii-cho
Shii-cho
Form I, or Shii-cho, is the oldest of all lightsaber forms. It is the most basic of forms and all other forms of fighting evolved from different uses of Form I. This form is also known as the Determination form or the Way of the Sarlacc. Shii-cho teaches the basic moves of attacking and parrying, and anyone who can hold a saber should be able to master it. Most younglings learn this through deflecting bolts fired by a training remote. It is not the best style for blaster deflection and lightsaber dueling, but it is a superior all-around form you can fall back on during combat.
Makashi
Makashi
Form II, or Makashi, is the most elegant of the six traditional forms. This form is also known as the Contention Form, or the Way of the Ysalamiri. (a creature from the inner rim) This is the preferred style for lightsaber-to-lightsaber dueling. Makashi emphasizes precision strikes and well-balanced footwork. Disarming moves are common for this form, as well as piercing thrusts. It is a one-handed style, so masters of this form prefer using balanced sabers, often of the curved hilt variant. Masters of Makashi are some of the most skilled duelists in the order.
Soresu
Soresu
The third form, Soresu, also known as the Resilience Form, or way of the Mynock, is the ultimate form for defense. Form III is the ideal style for intercepting blaster fire. Jedi who use this can often drop into Moving Meditation, which allows them to perceive the positions of the enemy and block attacks. Soresu use moves that are close to the body and hardly makes sweeps or lunges. This creates a defense cocoon that is difficult for the enemy to penetrate. However, this means that a Jedi who uses Form III is unable to mount a counterattack. Luckily, this type of defense preserves energy reserves while tiring the opponent, which could allow the Jedi to win.
Ataru
Ataru
Ataru is the fourth form and is also known as the Aggression Form, or the Way of the Hawk-Bat. Form IV is very acrobatic and its user is constantly on the offensive. This form often looks like a blur a lunges and leaps and is best for Jedi who can enhance their speed and stamina through use of the Force, though Ataru still remains an exhausting form that should only be used in short, devastating bursts. To use Form IV, a Jedi must have mastered movements such as spins, cartwheels, and somersaults. All three of the moves, combined with the Force, can allow a Jedi to leap higher and jab faster than their opponent can react. Form IV is best used against a single opponent, and it is not recommended to use against multiple foes unless you are a true Ataru master.
Shien/Djem So
Shien/Djem So
Form V is known as the Perseverance Form, or the way of the Krayt Dragon. It consists of two aspects: Shien and Djem So. The first aspect, Shien, is developed from Form III, Soresu. Unlike Form II, Shien allows the blaster fire to be redirected along any chosen vector, or back to their attackers. Djem So follows the same philosophy of turning an enemy's attack back on them, but is optimized for lightsaber combat. Djem So is based off of overpowering one's opponent, and is better for those of towering stature and imposing musculature. Form V has at times been considered inappropriate discipline for Jedi, due to its reliance on dominating the opponent. But those who can balance its aspects with compassion and the Force could even succeed in besting a Battlemaster.
Niman
Niman
Niman, also called the Moderation Form and the Way of the Rancor, is the sixth lightsaber form. It is also known as the "diplomat's form," for most who use it are those who have not chosen to make a career out of combat. Form VI draws from all styles to create a hybrid form, making it the most balanced. Because of the relaxed focus on bladework, Niman also incorporates the use of the Force as a way of combat. Force blasts and pulls are common to see. Niman is also associated with the use of twin blades. The form for wielding two blade is known as Jar'Kai, and Form VI is the foundation for any Jar'Kai learner.
Juyo/Vaapad
Juyo/Vaapad
Form VII, also known as the Ferocity Form or Way of the Vornskr, is the most vicious form of lightsaber combat. The Juyo aspect of this form is most commonly used by dark side users for that very reason. The Vaapad aspect is a more subdued version. Instead of focus all your rage and hatred into the attacks like in Juyo, Vaapad requires you to acknowledge your feelings and channel your inner darkness into a force of light. Form VII is also used with double-bladed lightsabers, something especially dangerous for the opponent as a Vaapad user's blade is often described as becoming to fast to see.
