How often do you hear the phrase “first impressions matter”? How many times have you been told to spiff up for a job interview, an important meeting or for personal reasons?
How many times have you personally experienced the lack of appeal something has, despite being a decent enough product? Like a pair of shoes that’s super comfortable, practical for everyday use and bang on the buck—but you put it back on the shelf because it just wasn’t pretty enough.

Are first impressions really that important?

The truth is, no matter how much positivity culture and faith are on your side, people will and do judge books by their covers. This is especially true for small businesses, startups and enterprises.
Your friends and family can support you, your community can help get your business off the ground, but none of them can sustain it forever. It’s important to build a clientele, get investors on board, or have some sort of running model that will bring in the money.
With hundreds of thousands of businesses emerging each year, there’s hardly any company that’s left with a monopoly. No matter what your niche is, even if it’s incredibly specific and exclusive, there will be competition.
So, when you’re up against other companies and individuals that offer the same skills, products and services, why would anyone specifically invest in you? What is going to make you stand out from the rest, giving you the edge you need?
This is why first impressions are often the last impressions. If your potential client is put off by what you’re showing them, they won’t give you their business. The same goes for investors and sponsors; especially more experienced and professional individuals who know how to determine if an investment is worth their time.

You could have the most incredible product in the market, or have years worth of experience and expertise in providing a particular service, and a small but loyal client base. However, if you’re unable to appeal to a wider base, there’s not a lot of hope of expansion or growth.
So, yes. First impressions do matter, a lot.

How can I make a good first impression?

A stellar first impression is typically a combination of different factors.
From the kind of clothes you wear during a meeting with your investors and clients, to how you communicate, the look of your product and how you present that too. Seeing as how it’s a digitized world, your business’s virtual presence also makes a huge difference.
Poorly made social media pages with bland content and a generic identity just don’t make the cut anymore.
