Walking in the school hallways, they would whisper "4.20" to each other to remind each other of the trip. It took more than one journey to find the free stash so they kept repeating the phrase "4.20". Eventually, it stuck, and 4.20 as we know it, was born man!

Sure. Sure. Anyway. The phrase began as just a private message between the friends, but they lived in San Rafael, California. This town had a uniquely high population of "dead heads", who heard the phrase and liked it, and made it their own. 'Cause why not, right?

Shyeah, man! Fans of the band "The Grateful Dead." Steven Hager of "High Times" decided that he wanted 4.20 pm to be the time it would be socially acceptable to partake of some Herbage every day, so he helped the phrase spread.

Hager didn't quite achieve his wish-but millions of people observe 4.20 every year. There are events in many major cities, including San Francisco, University of Colorado at Boulder, and UC Santa Cruz, for sure.
