How to Apply Clear Concrete Floor Sealers

Painted concrete surfaces are hard and sturdy, but they can quickly wear out when exposed to heavy foot traffic, furniture movement, or machinery. To avoid peeling and flaking, a transparent protective layer called clear concrete floor sealer is used.
 
What It Is
Concrete floors are porous; this means they’re susceptible to damage caused by physical or chemical intrusions. These can be a result of dragging heavy things or letting them be in contact with alkali-silica. However, the most common cause is water or moisture that has permeated the surface. This can deform and degrade not only the paint but also the structure itself.
 
Sealers solve these problems by covering the surface and blocking the "pores" with an impermeable layer. Since they’re transparent in color, they can protect the floor while still showing the original paint. To learn how to apply this substance, read the following steps:
 
Application Process
1.    Remove furniture, fixtures, and other equipment from the floor.
2.    Create segments for the areas where you’ll be working. One way to do this is to start from the corners and end at the access points.
3.    Clean the floor and make sure it's free from any impurities and loose dirt.
4.    Ensure that there’s a ventilation point and create barriers to block unnecessary foot traffic. Caution tape or signs work well.
5.    Improve the surface's appearance by removing oil stains with a degreaser and repainting the worn areas.
6.    Remove the degreasing agent and other dust and debris by washing it off with clean water.
7.    Leave the area until it dries thoroughly.
8.    Renovate damaged areas by filling cracks and crevices with putty or concrete.
9.    Allow the filler to dry.
10.  Pour the concrete sealer in an application tray or directly onto the floor.
11.  Apply the sealing agent evenly across the surface using a brush, roller, or other similar tools.
12.  Let it cure and re-apply as written in the manufacturer's instructions.
13.  Once the final coat is dry, you can allow foot traffic and move back your furniture and equipment.
 
When applying clear concrete floor sealer, always follow the recommendations and instructions indicated in the product you use. These sealers will wear out over time, so prevent damage by resealing the surface once every few years.
