Planet Circus, Seaburn Rec, Sunderland, until June 18

Roll up, roll up, Planet Circus is at Seaburn Rec until Sunday.
Highlights include “The world’s most dangerous circus act”, Team Brazil, in The Splitting Globe of Death, with motorcyclists speeding around inside a steel cage at more than 60mph.
Performances are at 5pm and 7.30pm on weekdays, Saturdays at 2pm and 5pm, and Sunday at 1pm and 3.30pm.

Summer Concert, Sunderland, July 1

The Sunderland Symphony Orchestra will be holding its Summer Concert on Saturday, July 1 at 7.30pm, in West Park Church in Stockton Road.
The programme will contain well-known pieces, such as Dance of the Hours (Ponchielli), Marche Militaire Française (Saint-Saëns) and Nimrod (Elgar).
Tickets are £8 including refreshments. Under 16s and students pay £5.

Oliver Twist, Sunderland, next week

The Royalty Theatre will conclude its 2016/17 season with an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist.
Director Andrew Barella said: “It’s a great honour and privilege to put such a timeless show like Oliver Twist onto the Royalty stage.
“The challenges of the show are minor compared to the joy it has been to work on. I hope the audiences, young and old, will enjoy our telling of this classic. We hope it’s a success for what has been a great season and will kick start us into our next year.”
The play runs at The Royalty Theatre, off Chester Road, from June 19 to 24, including a matinée performance on the 24th.

Genesis Tribute, Billingham Forum, June 23

And Finally… Phil Collins, a tribute to Phil Collins and Genesis, is at Billingham Forum next week.
The gig, on Friday, June 23, will mark 10 years of the act.
It features an 11-piece band and a new show for 2017.
As always, the two drummer line-up remains an integral part of the act as the band faithfully re-create all the classic hits from the timeless back catalogue.

Milonga, Theatre Royal, Newcastle, June 16 & 17

Dance show Milonga is at Theatre Royal Newcastle on Friday and Saturday.
Deeply rooted in Argentinian culture, Milonga is Spanish for “Tango Dance Party” and this show celebrates the street dance culture of Argentina that has influenced popular tango shows today, such as Theatre Royal favourites Vincent & Flavia and TV’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Joyce Manor, Durham City, July 9

Acclaimed Los Angeles band Joyce Manor have announced a UK and Ireland tour in July this year in support of album Cody.
The tour will kick off on July 4 in London and end 10 days later in Brighton.
It includes a date in Durham city centre at the Student Union cafe, in Dunelm House, New Elvet, on July 9 at 7pm.
Tickets are £10 and include a performance by local act Martha.

Artshow, Arts Centre Washington, until June 16

Artshow, an exhibition of art work from students from Sunderland Colleges HND Art & Design and Foundation Degree Photography, is running at Arts Centre Washington until tomorrow.
The exhibition is a culmination of two to three years of art and photography by Higher Education students from Sunderland College’s Visual Arts department.
It’s the first opportunity for the students to exhibit in a professional gallery space.
The Foundation Degree Photography students’ work ranges from documentary photographs of the fishermen of The Gut on North Shields fish quay, to photographs of North East wildlife, slick family portraits and images challenging notions of privacy and surveillance and street photographs of cafe culture.

Jobling, The Word, South Shields, June 24

Jobling, a new musical, will premiere at The Word in South Shields at 4pm and 6pm on June 24.
South Tyneside’s new state-of-the-art cultural venue is to present a one-off performance of the new musical by Tom Kelly, the writer of recent hits, Geordie the Musical and The Dolly Mixtures. It was written with Steve Thompson.
It’s based on events surrounding William Jobling, Jarrow Pitman and the last man gibbeted in the north in 1832.
