Dr. Ray Stantz is "the heart" of the Ghostbusters. He mortgaged the house his parents left him to provide the capital to begin the Ghostbusters. He is the one most devoted to the pursuit of studying the paranormal.

Dr. Egon Spengler is "the brain" behind the Ghostbusters. He designed and built most of their equipment including the Proton Packs and the Containment Unit. Only Ray seems to be able to keep up with Egon once he starts speaking technical jargon.

If there is a "leader" of the Ghostbusters, it's Dr. Peter Venkman. Though he would probably use the term "front man". He doesn't take his work too seriously, and while he is a scientist he isn't technically experienced like Ray or Egon.
