Funding the Arts

Should the government provide federal funding for art programs in public schools? This list hopes to show you that the answer is yes!

1

Learning a New Skill

First and foremost, any time a person learns a new skill, it will challenge them and help them grow. Learning to read music and play an instrument makes a person more diverse and more understanding of issues in the music world

2

Friendship

Being in a musical ensemble, whether it be a band, a choir, etc., helps build connections like nothing else can. Friends you make in high school music programs tend to be your friends for life.

3

Family

In addition to helping build friendships, music ensembles create a family-like structure. Many children in public schools lack a standard family structure, and music helps fill that void. After spending time in an ensemble, you become a second family with your fellow musicians.

4

Exercise!

Not many people realize this, but programs like marching band and show choirs require an immense amount of physical assertion. Just think about it, you're basically exhaling for 10 minutes straight while running around a football field carrying a heavy instrument and wearing a cotton uniform.

5

Music Makes You Smarter

Research shows that participating in music and learning music help increase academic performance in high school students.

6

Empathy

When you make music, you make yourself vulnerable to the audience for judgement. This is often quite nerve-racking for high school students. However, because all musicians go through this, it tends to make musicians much more empathetic people.

7

Personal Enjoyment

Learning to play an instrument or sing while in high school can provide a skill you will keep for a lifetime. It is something an individual will always have that they can use to bring themselves happiness.

8

Contributing to Musical Culture

Many musicians go on after high school to write their own music. Some even make music that becomes extremely popular. These musicians help contribute to the musical culture by bringing their individual style into the mix.

So should we fund music?

As you can probably see, there are a plethora of reasons to fund musical programs in public schools. Music is an extremely personal and important form of self-expression that all people should have the ability to do, regardless of financial standing.
