Warriors news that Joe Lacob reiterates intention to retire Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala's numbers.

Golden State Warriors news: Team owner Joe Lacob has said it on multiple occasions, and he said it again; the Warriors intend to retire the numbers of Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala.

Durant and Iguodala were both significant parts of the Warriors franchise, as they helped transform the team into a dynasty. Golden State has made it to the Finals for five consecutive seasons, winning three championships during that span.

In an interview with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami, Lacob said that the Warriors will always be grateful for KD and Iggy, adding that when everything is said and done, they intend for both players’ numbers to be raised in the rafters of the team’s new arena, Chase Center.

“The intention is to retire [Durant’s] number, but we specifically said it that way, for now. Because he’s still playing, it’s kind of inappropriate to some extent to say you’re gonna retire his number when he’s still playing in the league, but that’s the intention.”

“We always wanna be gracious. I’ve said all along, he and any player like Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, whoever it is, a free agent, it’s their choice. They earned it. They have the right to make the choice they want to make.”

Durant, who wore No. 35 during his three-year stint with the Warriors, led the team to back-to-back championship victories in 2017 and 2018, and he was hailed as the Finals MVP on both occasions. The Dubs had a chance to go for a third-straight title last season, but they were too banged up when they made it to the Finals against the Toronto Raptors. In fact, KD missed the first four games of that series, and when he returned in Game 5, he tore his Achilles. The Raps eventually won the chip in Game 6.

Iguodala was already a part of the Warriors when they were just on the rise. He was instrumental in their championship win in 2015, where he had an excellent Finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was able to make it difficult for LeBron James on the defensive end, and that paved the way for Golden State to succeed. He won the Finals MVP that year.

Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to keep their championship roster intact, as Durant decided to join the Brooklyn Nets as a free agent, and they had no choice but to trade Iguodala to the Memphis Grizzlies. Golden State will look a lot different next season.

But no matter what happens, Durant and Iguodala are already a part of the Warriors’ history, and it is just fitting for the franchise to repay them by retiring their numbers.
