A TDS return summarizes all the transactions related to TDS that you’ve made during a specific quarter. Income Tax Act mandates that the assessee who has deducted taxes at the time of incurring any expenditure needs to file quarterly TDS returns. Failing to do so can attract a penalty. The filing has to be supported by TDS/TCS documents. Also, in order to file TDS, the assessee needs to have a TAN number.

There are various types of TDS filing forms available. They are as below:

  • Form 24Q: It is the TDS statement for salaries which includes employees’ TDS deducted by the employer.
  • Form 26Q: It involves the TDS on all payments other than salaries.
  • Form 27Q: It deals with the tax deducted at source for the NRIs and foreigners. The types of income on which TDS applies are dividend, interest, bonus or any other sum owed.
  • Form 27EQ: This quarterly statement represents all the tax collected at source.

It is also important to note that while filing TDS return statements, the assessee is required to provide a signed verification in Form 27A. This form is the summary of TDS return with control totals of the amount paid and tax deducted at source during various transactions. You can choose to file TDS returns either online or over the counter in person at the designated filing centers. This article lists down simples steps to TDS e-payment.
Online filing is a simple process. You need to download and utilize the Return Preparation Utility (RPU) available on the NSDL website.

  • Visit the NSDL website - https://www.tin-nsdl.com/.
  • On the website, look for the Downloads tab and click it. It will show you a link called Quarterly Returns Regular on the left side of the screen. You’ll need to click it and it will take you to a new page.
  • On the new page, find Return Preparation Utility (RPU). Click the link and download the TDS RPU file.
  • Run the saved RPU file and it’ll open a portal for you. Select the quarter for which you need to file the TDS return and select Regular. This leads to the next page.
  • You need to select the financial year on this page and the assessment year will get populated automatically. After this, fill all the required details.
  • Once you’ve filled the details, click Challan. This will open up a new page with several rows to enter your TDS challans for the last quarter.
  • Add challans and fill all required details. If required, add more rows.
  • After you complete this section and validate all the details entered, a File Validation Utility or FVU file will be generated which you’ll need to save on your computer.
  • Go to the TDS website, upload this FVU file and click Validate, and your TDS returns are filed.

As the steps above make it clear, it’s quite a simple process and doesn’t take a long time. You only have to ensure that you follow the due dates carefully and file your returns properly so that you can avoid paying the unnecessary penalty.
