Identify and analyze your limiting beliefs to clear your path to success

Jason Kulpa, the founder of San Diego based UE.co, believes the right mindset is the key to unlocking your success. Mr. Kulpa is not only a successful businessman but has used his positive thinking to give back to the community through opportunities such as the Jason Kulpa Wife Scholarship. Whether you want to start your own business or create a non-profit organization focused on local volunteer work, Mr. Kulpa’s insights shared below will help guide you to the path of success.

Limiting beliefs are things we believe without question, but may not necessarily be true. Without questioning our limiting beliefs or testing how hard of a limit they actually are, we can't achieve our true potential in life.

Not all limiting beliefs are bad. For example, a limiting belief can be that it is wrong to rob someone of their money. This is a good limit to have! Rejecting it can lead you to do unethical things and face dire legal consequences.

But other limiting beliefs may not be true. For example, the most common limiting beliefs are thoughts that start with "I can't..." when you have an idea of something you could do.

I should start my own business.....I can't do that!

And for too many people, that's it! They brush against the fence of the "I can't..." thought and back right away.

Instead, you need to push against that thought, just like a cow or a horse will test out the fences holding it in. When your brain says, "I can't!" then you respond by asking yourself, "Why not?"

Your brain will respond by giving you actual reasons:

--Because you aren't smart enough.

--Because you don't have the skills you need.

--Because you can't afford to take the risk of leaving your secure paycheck.

Aha! Now you have something you can work with. You can take each reason and examine it. Pull it into the light and turn it around and look at all the angles. Let's assume, "you don't have the skills you need." First, consider if this statement holds any truth. Next, ask yourself what skills you need for your business idea to be successful. Make a list.

Now you can objectively evaluate. Maybe you listed, "No bookkeeping experience." Okay. Do you absolutely need bookkeeping experience? Or are there software programs that can walk you through what you need to know? How much would it cost to hire someone on a freelance basis to do your books for you? How hard is it to learn how to do bookkeeping - there is probably an inexpensive "For Dummies" book or an online course out there.

Then you move on to the next reason your brain threw out at you, and do the same thing. Decide if it's actually a problem, and decide if it's a solvable one. Make an action plan for solving it.

Sounds feasible, right? That's how you evaluate your limiting beliefs and decide if they are indeed the limit you think they are, and how you could work around or get past it to get to where you want to be.

The most important skill, however, is to train yourself to recognize a limiting belief in the first place. Too often we hit those "I can't..." moments and treat it like a toddler with a hot stove - don't think about it, just back off to safety.

Instead, when you have that reflexive backing away response, notice it and catch yourself. Tell yourself, "That's a limiting belief." This gives you permission to take another look, to test, analyze, and evaluate the belief and the reasons behind it.

Just learning to recognize and question a limiting belief is a huge step that so many people never take. Most limiting beliefs have deep roots in childhood and haven't been revisited or questioned in many years, but treated as a simple fact. Once you know how to identify and analyze your limiting beliefs, you will be amazed at how many of them evaporate, clearing your path to success.
