Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by low bone mass.  The bones tend to weaken as you get older. More than 10 million Americans who are above the age of 50 are affected by osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). The medication for osteoporosis is quite expensive and most of them have not been effective in the treatment of the condition. However, the use of CBD for osteoporosis could prove to be one of the most effective treatments for the condition.

Studies have shown that women are more prone to osteoporosis due to the effects of menopause, which results to lose of bones.  The risk factors for osteoporosis include a family history of the condition, a lower (BMI) Body Mass Index, heavy drinking and smoking, and a long-term use of corticosteroids. DEXA scan is used to diagnose osteoporosis as it measures the density of your bone. This is compared to that of a young, healthy adult and an individual of the same age and gender. There are a number of medications for the treatment of the condition which include Forteo and Bisphosphonates. Conversely, CBD for bone is an all natural way of treating osteoporosis which helps to mitigate the onset and progression of the condition.

Research on the effectiveness of CBD in treating osteoporosis

The endocannabinoid system regulates most of the physiological processes in the body and has recently been linked with the regulation of bone metabolism.  Endocannabinoids are produced in bone. Studies in the skeletal phenotyping of mice which had their cannabinoid receptors inactivated showed a high peak bone mass. Additionally, the mice developed age-related osteoporosis due to the impaired bone formation. This was as a result of inactivation of the cannabinoid receptors. CBD for osteoporosis is therefore effective in the treatment of bone low bone mass for those people diagnosed with the condition.

The central nervous system plays a significant role in bone metabolism regulation. Recent studies indicate that endocannabinoids are responsible for the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. The two main endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AR are found in the skeleton.  In a study where there was generic inactivation of CB1 and CB2 receptors in adult mice, the bone resorption suppressed which led to an increase in bone mass and ultimately, protection against bone loss. The deficiency of CB1 receptors in aged mice resulted in an age-dependent osteoporosis. This study favored the use of CBD for bones in the treatment of osteoporosis in humans.

The bone mass is regulated by cannabinoid ligands. Cannabinoid (CBD) has been found to enhance the biomechanical properties of treating femoral fractures in rats. A number of rats in a study were administered with a mixture of CBD for 8 weeks. These rats had fractures in their femurs and after the 8 weeks, the fracture sizes were significantly reduced. The results showed that the use of CBD improved the healing of the fractures on the mice and demonstrated the effectiveness of the use of CBD for osteoporosis in treating the condition.

In another study conducted on mice, results showed that the deficiency of CB2 receptors accelerated age-related bone loss and the expansion of the cortical. However, the thickness of the cortical in the mice remained constant. The changes were similar to osteoporosis, which affects humans and the condition commonly results from the cortical bone remodeling and the differential regulation of the trabecular. The results showed that the endocannabinoid system is responsible for the normal bone mass maintenance by the osteoblastic and osteoclastic. In addition, the use of CBD for bones is effective in the treatment of osteoporosis as CB2 offers a molecular target for diagnosis.

Every mammal has a functioning cannabinoid system found in the organs and tissues in the body. Recent studies have reported the presence of endocannabinoid and its receptors in the skeleton.  The bone forming cells known as osteoblasts and the bone resorbing cells osteoclasts produce the endocannabinoids. The study on mice with CB2 deficiency showed an accelerated age-related bone loss. The bone loss in mice was induced by the CB2 attenuates due to the restriction of the bone resorption and formation. Thus, synthetic CB2 ligands provide a basis for the development of anti-osteoporotic therapies. This study shows that the use of CBD for osteoporosis is effective in terms of treatment and can lead to a reduction of bone loss.

The existing research on CBD suggests that it prevents further loss of bones as a treatment for osteoporosis. Pharmaceuticals taken by patients with osteoporosis may not be as effective s CBD due to its bone repair capabilities. CBD for bones can help your body to fight bone loss and ultimately keep osteoporosis at bay.
