How To Build A Career You Love

Since your career is going to take up half of your waking life, shouldn't you love what you do? Unfortunately, because so many people live in survival mode, they rush through their job search to find anything they can so they can pay the bills.

While it's understandable that you need to do something to get money in so that you have a roof over your head and food on the table, it's critical that you not get complacent and just settle for that job. Otherwise you can wake up one day ten years down the road miserable and find yourself entering into depression because you have just been "getting by" leaving you feeling unfulfilled with your life.

Here are a four things you should consider if you want to create a career and life you love:

1. Have A Strategy

There is nothing wrong with taking "any job" to start getting money in so long as you have a strategy. For example, if you want to wait tables or work at Starbucks, that's fine. But don't settle in to that job. In fact, you should use the dissatisfaction of that job as something that motivates you to find another job. But if you are going to take that job, make sure it's part of your overall plan.

2. Get Help

Building a life and career you love is going to take a lot of effort. Unfortunately so many people try and go it alone and are afraid to ask for help. Be open to hiring a life coach or a career mentor who can help guide you along this process. While it may put some pressure on your wallet to have to pay a professional, it is going to speed up the process of your success saving you a lot of time and headaches.

3. Pick An Industry

While you may have studied marketing, accounting, design, programming, etc., it's important that you begin positioning yourself in an industry so that you can become an expert of that industry and build your network. Companies want to hire the best candidates they can which means that they are looking for someone who is an expert in that industry.

For example, lets say that you have been doing marketing in the SaaS space for the last five years. And then you decide to go after a marketing job in the education space. While you may be technically qualified at marketing, the education company wants to hire someone who has been doing marketing in their space. While they may interview you, you will not be at their top of the list.

Here's another reason it's important to pick an industry: because you will be spending a lot of time with these people. Remember, your job will take up half of your waking life. It's the other "person" you are married to. From conventions to conferences and networking events, you are going to be seeing these people on a regular basis. So find an industry you can believe in.

4. Work-Life Balance

Finding balance in your life and career is going to be essential if you want to be happy. Sadly, many people find themselves overworked, stressed out, and riddled with anxiety because their life is all work and no play.
Yes, being passionate about what you do is important. And of course, it's good to give it your all and work hard. But having fun and knowing how to take time to rest is essential if you want to live a balanced life. The key is to stay focused on one thing at a time and do it as best as you can.

For example, if you are doing work related items, then focus 100% on your work. Don't get distracted on Facebook or texts. And when you are at home resting, don't do work-related items. Focus 100% of your attention on resting so you can get the most from it.
