Fritigern was a Gothic Chieftain who converted his followers to Christianity in 376 CE.

Facing religious persecution from rival Visigothic king Athanaric he sought refuge with the Romans. However, Roman General Lupicinus lured Fritigern and other key tribe members to his camp only to capture them and murder their bodyguards. Fritigern was able to negotiate freedom by promising to calm his people.

Once free from Roman capture, Fritigern plotted his revenge. He gathered other disgruntled tribes and orchestrated several successful guerrilla attacks against the Romans. Both Western and Eastern Roman Emperors sent their forces over in retaliation.

At Adrianople, Fritigern and his men chased Emperor Valens until he hid in a nearby barn. They lined the outside with hay and set it on fire, with Valens burning alive inside. Fritigern then led his people to Thrace, where they settled as free people.

Fritigern is remembered as a barbarian hero who beat Roman oppression and killed an Emperor. He is honoured in the Walhalla memorial in Bavaria as "Friediger."
