The couple met the night he was celebrating his victory in the mayoral election in Burlington.

They dated for seven years before tying the knot.

The 1st being Anna Harrison, wife of President William Henry Harrison.

According to Bernie Sanders, Jane could debate former president Bill Clinton. “I would love for him to be debating my wife. She's pretty smart”.

In the '90s she served almost 10 years as the director of youth services in Burlington, Vermont.

Starting in the early 2000s.

The New York Times wrote in 2000 that Jane Sanders "has been a key adviser in his political career."

Before working at Burlington College, Sanders was an education and politics consultant at a Vermont-based firm.

She studied child development at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and later got her Master's in social work from Goddard College. She also received her PhD in Leadership Studies in Politics and Education from the Union Institute and University in 2000.

She said her father's health only improved once her older brother offered to pay for it. For her, it was a political awakening to the role of money.

"When I heard him speak, well, that was it" she says.

“I’m a thinker. I think with empathy ... It’s more looking out at the people. And that includes the Republicans, you know the people that might be opposed to us. Trying to understand why is it that they want what they want. And then how do we find common ground.”

Bloomberg reports that in 1996, Bernie spoke affectionately of his wife, saying, "Yes, she is a soulmate, a sounding board."

On his character she says "I have seen Bernie deliver for the people that need him, no matter who the people were. And always, he does what is right."
