The Nintendo 64 was a great console that helped to usher in the age of 3D. The mechanics of Super Mario 64 set the standard for the 3D platformer, something that can still be seen today in games like Yooka-Laylee. But the console has been dead since it was discontinued back in 2003.

But today it was announced that a new game is making its way onto the console thanks to the people over at Piko Interactive. Well, new isn't exactly the right word as 40 Winks was supposed to grace the N64 before being canceled due to the shuttering of GT Interactive when it was bought up by Infogrames.

Now the folks at Piko Interactive have launched a Kickstarter Campaign to bring the game out. We've seen these sorts of things before for the NES and SNES, but I believe this is a first for the Nintendo 64. Since the game is essentially complete code, Piko is looking to raise a very reasonable $20,000 to get carts produced.

The game itself features six levels to play through, as well as a two-player co-op mode for added fun. Piko also says there are a bunch of mini-games and other content to make it worth your while.

40 Winks was originally developed by Eurocom, so the game itself might be hit or miss. They didn't have the best track record with award-winning titles, but they also produced a fair number of okay games during their life.

Still, the idea of playing a brand-new Nintendo 64 video game is enough to get this writer to drop a pledge to the Kickstarter. And if you don't have a Nintendo 64, you can still pledge to support the game and snag a digital copy for Steam when it releases.
